My buddy asked if I change my own 10-W50 oil (LMAO)

[And I was like "LMFAO, what am I, some kind of hunter gatherer? May as well pack it all up and head into the wilderness if I want to do that. Why do you think they have places with tradesmen anxious to pour some fresh oil into your car".

He said he wanted to learn how to change it to at least be less of a moron. I was like ROFLMAO changing your own oil doesn't make you less of a moron, only more of a tradesman]

Depends on the car.

Mechanics usually put sh!t oil and charge you like $100 for a euro car. If you can earn $50/hr why not change it yourself.

Can't call yourself a man, if you can't do so much as change your oil.
What kind of self respecting man, doesn't own any basic tools?
Next your going to say you refuse to mow your own lawn, or fix those leaky pipes under your sink.

Exotics cost upwards of $400/oil change and thats at an independent mechanic. Its about $780 at the dealership.
Needless to say, I change my own oil on those cars and let other people change oil on my daily drivers.

Honestly can't blame you on this one though. If I were you'd I'd have a custom alarm installed that beeped whenever a tradesmen was within 10 ft of the car just so they don't get any funny ideas.

It's definitely a skill to have, but oil changes are cheap enough that there's almost no reason to do it yourself.

Oils filters on modern cars are often a total bish to get off and if you damage the filter badly car is immobile. I did it as student, not worth it now - same wit break pads, brake fluid etc.

wtf no it's not lol..

You put a socket on a ratchet wrench and take it off. Takes less than 30 seconds.. It takes me less than 10 minutes to change the oil on my Mustang. Jack it up with my floor jack, put jack stands under it, take out drain plug, take out and replace oil filter and oil filter gasket while it drains, put drain plug back in, lower car and refill oil in the hood. I leave the ugly oil in my garage until I have to go to a parts store again then I just dump it there.

I do ALL work on my car except things that require welding because I can't weld for sh*t. I've saved at least $2,000 in labor this year by doing all work myself and buying parts with a wholesale discount. Lol at people who try to rationalize their incompetence.. Whatever to happened to men who can look after themselves. Not just for cars but with basic electronics, plumbing, yard work, construction and such. The majority of work on cars doesn't even require legitimate skill. It's literally like legos ( taking sh*t apart and following basic instructions ) until you start doing your own fabrication or very special snowflake work.

Because every self respecting man who drives a car should at least know basic maintenance.

I change mine just because you should see the hacks that work in oil changing. My wife had her oil changed there a few months ago. The other week I noticed a pile of oil under her car getting bigger and bigger. Turns out the oil filter was coming loose.
