Buying my first motorcycle. Rec me mods.

Going to buy my first bike. A black 2006 Ninja 250.

I know I'm not going to get a whole lot of performance upgrades, and I'm not that much interested in giving myself +10hp, but I'm more looking for things that will make my bike more usable, comfortable, and cool looking.

So far, I'm going to

-Paint calipers red
-Throttle holder/cruise control
-Handlebar watch.

Have also heard of a rear delete or whatever it's called, not sure I want to try that. I want to keep it unmolested enough so that I can sell it if I ever want to. Also, any simple upgrades that will get me more familiar with bike mechanics and how they work are extra appreciated.

Reps for advice.

Don't do anything. You'll outgrow that bike quickly and move on to something else. You will be wasting money if you spend a dime

Looks like a typo. Are you asking 'Red me mods'?

edit; real tea though. glad you're starting on a 250. i recommend it. but i can also tell you that you'll be wishing to upgrade in the rather near future. (still recommend starting off with it fo sho). Get used but good condition and the resale value is pretty good on those, you might be able to break out flat after all your miles, maybe even make a little profit if you're good..

I just left my job at Harley-Davidson NFY, and everyone there says the same thing about getting you're first bike:

"If you're learning how to ride, get a cheap Honda."

Eventually, you WILL mess up and either bail off of your bike or have it go out from under you. Better that you scratch a chitty old $1500 motorcycle than something that is either way too fast for you to learn on OR too expensive. Just my 0.02...

Go on an MSF course if you haven't yet. A nice helmet and gloves go a long way.

Respect the bike, no matter the cc under you. The moment you think you have total control it comes to humble you, and those lessons hurt.

Ehh, don't think I'll be upgrading anytime soon. I'll have this bike at least a year. Don't have the money to be buying anything special.

I think I'm getting a pretty great deal on this bike anyways. $1250 for a 2006 Ninja 250 with only 2500 miles. He originally posted it@1350 but I talked him down.

As I said above, I'm getting this thing as a pretty great deal. Definitely think I'll be able to sell it for more if/when I decide.

I don't know if you're commenting on my good decision to buy a cheap 250 or of you're trying to give me advice. See above posts^ and the OP.

Fuk that chit, I don't have $1000 for some guy to coach me simple chit on a bike.

I am buying a nice helmet and leather gloves, though, and saving up for a jacket in the near future.

Anyways, actual mods on my bike, anyone?

if you want to make the bike look good, tail tidy is a must.

Can confirm, I did the MSF course and it was great. Plus you get discounts on your insurance, don't have to take the riders test at the DMV (California) and it's just pretty fun.

And it's only like $250.

Anyway OP it's a good sign that you got the 250, it's the starter bike everyone recommends and for good reason. Also good that you seem only interested in cosmetic mods. Just stick with that and don't do stupid chit like getting a new exhaust pipe or carburetor mods for performance gains.

Get a garbage beater off eBay, or learn dirt bikes first. Sell the beater at the same cost you bought it for after you learn to ride the thing properly, and have probably dropped it once or twice. This means turning at high speeds/accelerating fast, etc.

Old beat up 250 should get the job done. But plan to sell it later.

Then buy a twin cylinder engine, 500cc or less. Get really good on the thing.

Now you can start thinking about sports bikes with L4 engines.

don't waste a single penny adding "mods" to a ninja 250. You will be ready to sell that bike in less than 6 months. save your money and buy a real bike after you've become a more proficient rider.

Welcome bro.

Although two wheels are two wheels, at 6'0 and 200lbs, I am sure you'll be upgrading sooner than you think.

Don't waste any money onupgrades. Put it towards the course that everyone else recommended.

I recommend taking a motorcycle safety foundation course, or at the very least find a empty parking lot and practice doing panic stops and swerving to avoid obstacles.

A lot of what they teach you seems very basic and common sense, but you get some experience practicing skills that aren't intuitive. So that when you do get in a situation where you need that skill, you'll already have it in your instincts to react a certain way. Basically you will form good habits by learning to ride this way vs. doing it yourself.

Learning to ride a motorcycle is not hard, reacting quickly and correctly when you get caught out in a bad moment is the hard bit.

Starting on a 250cc is such a bull**** joke in the motorcycling community. No reason you can't start on a 600, the throttle will kill you just as fast if you mess around on either bikes (A 600 is just more sensitive). I started on a 600 inline 4 when i was 19, easier to learn on as well tbh.

I never understood starting on a ninja 250 which seems to be the US go to bike. My buddy started on one and within 2 months he regretted it, I bought a 10 yr old suzuki SV 650 as my 1st bike for the same price as him with cheaper insurance (classed as a tourer not a sports bike) and it was the best choice I could have made. As far as mods I recommend to do absolutely nothing to it, by one with a tail tidy that's it. You don't even have enough for a jacket but you wanna mod your bike? you're a special type.
