My day at the 2016 RNC protests. Notes and 65 pictures included.

Couple quick points, being from NE Ohio and working downtown Cleveland I had to go check out the circus yesterday and Monday.

  • We listened to the police scanner all week during the convention. Things that dont make the news are police getting stabbed with syringes, getting stickers stuck to them with chemicals in the adhesive, stopping people pulling wagons with dozens of glass bottles filled with urine, apprehending people on roof tops with cinder blocks, stopping people on bikes with packbacks full of bolts, stopping people coming into the square carrying baseball bats and golf clubs, putting out fires from moron flag burners, strange people passing off heavily weighted backpacks, anarchists hiding piles of bricks in baby strollers, people hiding metal pipes in flower pots, police getting thumb tacks thrown at them to disable their bicycles, etc. You won't hear this stuff on the news, but you will hear it on the scanner.

  • Many, many groups were there in protest. Those include Black Lives Matter, Revolutionist Communists, Pro Trump, Anti Trump, Pro/Against abortion, anarchists, New Black Panthers, Love Trumps Hate, Nazis, Hells Angels, New World Militia, open carry fanatics, etc - by far the worst of the worst was Westboro Baptist Church / God Hates F@gs people. The filth and hatred that comes out of their mouths in the name of religion is sickening and repulsive. Loud, obnoxious, and armed with blaring bullhorns and amplified speaker systems. The second biggest antagonists were Black Lives Matter. They were everywhere, in large numbers, very angry and hostile.

  • There were thousands of state troopers there from 19 different states. Because of the nature of my job I was able to interact with several dozen over the course of the week. Many from GA, TX, SC, IN, and California. I gave the California troopers grief about the Warriors losing to my Cavs non-stop the entire week but it was all in good fun. We thanked each of them for being there and they were all very appreciative of our support and for welcoming them. Florida state troopers dress like safari big game hunters, for whatever reason.

  • The police were extremely well organized and functioned as a fluid machine. I saw 100% professionalism and super human restraint and patience given the angry people screaming in their faces and what was being said to them. The police could have unleashed the dogs on the BLM people at any moment and I believe anyone in attendance would have thought they were justified.

    I had the police scanner streaming on my phone with my ear buds in while in the main area so I got to hear in real time where the action was and where they were headed. I only saw the guy on the roof with cinder blocks but police wereeverywhereand responded within minutes for each call so by the time I cut through the crowds whatever was happening was under control.
