Got a chance to see them in person and they look even better than in photos. Haven't test drove one yet though. It has always been a dream of mine to own a high end sportscar, in particular a Porsche 911. But I realized recently that I will never make enough money to afford one. So I figured having a nice german luxury sports sedan would be the next best thing.

I see tons of BMWs everyday so I was thinking about getting an Audi because I think they look quite striking and less common. The Mercedes C class looks nice as well but that is more luxury than performance oriented. The thing is I never bought a car so expensive. To me $45k is a substantial amount of money but it wouldn't break me financially either. If I really wanted to I could buy the car outright trading in my current car and spending all of my savings. But that wouldn't be smart either draining everything I have. So I figure just trade in my current car and throw in some cash as a downpayment. Then pay the rest off in 2 years which is doable after I crunched some numbers.

I don't have any debts right now or a mortgage because I rent. I know the smart thing would be just save for a few more years and put the money as a downpayment for a house but I figure that since I don't have a wife or family that I really don't need a house. I always loved cars and this would be an affordable dream car for me. I know in my head spending so much money on a car is beyond stupid but for the past few weeks I can't stop thinking about getting one. What should I do?

I like coupes and smaller sedans. It is easier to get around town and find parking. I would know buying used would be much cheaper but just read too many horror stories about buying used german cars.

Obviously if I wanted the best deal on a car I would buy a Honda Accord or some other boring car. But I am talking about worth it in the sense of a luxury sports sedan.

Ohh there is a redesign? Interesting. Then I would have to wait a generation or two for Audi to work out the kinks since I don't trust first gen models.
Buying new. I'm 30 and I make enough. Like I said I could buy it outright but probably won't since that would completely drain all my savings. I have no debts and could pay $1k/month just so I could pay it off fast. I also plan on owning my next car for 10 years so really thinking about making a solid choice.

What's impractical? If you want a Porsche anyways. Buy an old beater for your daily driver call it a day.

Cayman is a wicked car, and 2017 model is crazy. Standard is a 2.0 liter 300hp, which is better than the goddamn AMG M113 engine. S model has a 2.5 liter 350hp powerplant. Standard starts making 280ft/lb torque at 1950rpm, S model 309 at 1900rpm and maintains it through to 4000rpm.

unless you are making like 200k, getting a car like that is highly wasteful imo. Just get a lightly used <5 year old honda or toyota, you can't go wrong with that homey.

It's your money so if it is worth it to you, then go for it. I'd rather save up for the 911 and go for a used car now.

If you don't hate JDM scene you could wait for the Honda Type R to be released. Which is very soon.

So am I. You can get a much nicer luxury car (BMW 3 series, MB C class, Volvo S60, Acura and Lexus, etc) for the money. The S3 is literally an overpriced Jetta.

When I saw it in person I fell in love with it srs. I know it is stupid but I have the money and no other financial obligations since I am not married or have kids. When I see people driving really nice cars I am envious. I don't think bad thoughts about the owners or become jealous in a malicious way but it makes me look forward to the day where I too would own one. Like I said I always enjoyed cars as a hobby and this would be like a dream come true. On one hand I know I should just drive my current car until it breaks down because it is in perfect working condition and save my money for a house. But another part of me says I am still young enough to enjoy an impulsive purchase like a new car. A real conundrum. I should probably think about it for a bit longer before I commit.

I actually want misc to talk me out of it in a way because I know that is the smart and reasonable decision. All logical conclusions point to it but for some reason I just can't stop thinking about it. I would never buy a 911 in reality. That is just wishful thinking. I will never make the kind of money that would let me afford one. Plus I would be so paranoid about potential damages to the car that I would not be able to enjoy owning one.
Offerings from Volvo, Acura and Lexus don't really interest me. I see so many BMWs everyday that I want something less common. Mercedes C class is really nice as well but that doesn't seem sporty enough for me. I always liked Audis and a S3 is the perfect size for my needs. Plus I think they look amazing.

Iv always been a fan of the 2008-2013 Audi S5...never got one due to engine issues scattered among the Audi forums, scared me off. The older gen engine had some issues, with the V8, that is.

I would never drop $45k on one though. I mean hell, you can get a used RCF or Jag Ftype for that price tag

German cars are a money pit. Factor in the cost of repairs and maintenance. A nice home is a much better goal.

I always been a giant fan of the RS4s. But since they don't make the model anymore I figure a S3 is the next best alternative. Something about the S4's proportions that doesn't look as pleasing to me as the S3.

S3 is a Golf R wrapped in sedan clothes. The Golf is every bit as nice inside but with the practicality of being a hatch. A buddy of mine just sold his S3 for an R because of how small the S3 was.
