Living the Frugal Life *Official Thread*

There is a difference in being cheap and being frugal.

One has the financial wherewithal to understand their financial situation and budget, knowing what and where to spend money.

The other has a poor mans mindset and through actions and word, is cheap.

My wife and I are able to save $1600+/mo living the frugal lifestyle. But we are not lacking in amenities, we just dont have poor spending habits.

A costco membership through my workplace enables us to save a chit ton of money of chicken breast, almonds, almond butter, frozen fruits, bread, etc that we can buy in bulk for the month.

Our weekly trips to the grocery store are for fresh fruits/veggies, ground turkey, and weekly items. We probably save 100-200/mo just on our grocery bill like this.

We rarely go to the movies, but if we do its on $7 tickets on Tuesday night. Bring in our own candy and drinks in her purse.

Do not eat out on week night unless a special occasion.
Mostly brew our own coffee at home, but I need my iced coffee from the local coffee house so I have a coffee budget.

Other than that there is no spending during the week, so we can do fun things on the weekend, or stay at home and keep on saving.

Only pay $900 in rent living in my mothers home's attached apartment while we save for a condo/house. At that point we will only increase the monthly rent/mortgage budget up a few hundred.

Both drive old cars, from 2004 & 2006. Insurance together is only $84 through Geico with good coverage.

On virgin mobile phone plans paying $30/mo plus tax for unlimited /5g internet.

We have dreams of one day being financially independent and we both have a good head on our shoulders when it comes to money.

Would like to retire close to a beach.

just a little tidbit for miscers who have their own apartment or live with gf, roommates, etc. it is easy to qualify for food stamps if you make less than 2200 a month. make an appointment, bring your paystubs, rental agreement, monthly bills (internet, electric, water) and as many IDs as you can. social, drivers, state etc.

this is what you pay taxes for and 6 months of help isnt shameful in the least. single guys can easily qualify for 200/month.

My ultimate goal is to buy either land and build a cabin or just buy a pre built cabin in the mountains somewhere. Not like Colorado because that is millions - but somewhere in the Appalachian's where you can buy like 10 acres and a nice cabin for like $300k.

Currently invest about $700 a month in various account. Only make 20k a year tho. Have job interview tomorrow. If I land this, Ill be set.

But I agree OP. Me living on "short stack" from not having a job has taught me a lot about want vs need. Havent bought new clothes in 2 years. Car is from 06 and plan to drive it until it cant be driven anymore. Dont waste money on starbucks or drinks.

I can honestly say the only thing I really do misses is going out to eat at restaurants. We still do from time to time, but going to get mexican or a nice italian place is hnnnng.

I used to cringe so hard when Id look at my debit card statement and see 90% of the charges on food.

I hate buying clothing lol.

I will only buy from tj maxx or marshalls, even then I will only buy like 3-4 times a year and its usually old ralph lauren polo tshirts from 1-2 seasons ago.

lol at paying 1000% markups on thread sewn together in a sweatshop for $0.05.

dice up onions and bellpeppers really small and sautee them in a very small amount of olive oil brah. mix it into the rice. mushrooms work too. if you wanna get crazy try eggplant and diced apples.

I shop at target now or tj maxx that's not in malls.

Can't speak for recipes I suck at cooking. Going to start learning how to make bulk meals with crock pot and rice cooker soon though.

You dun good, op. Being smart with your money is definitely a good idea. Being a cheap fooker is a different story though. Identifying and differentiating wants and needs goes a long way to spending more intelligently. Also, despite huge discounts, you don't save money if you had no intention of buying it in the first place.

Instead of burning money on stupid car payments we are able to take 2-3 big vacations a year along with a handful of weekend getaways thrown in between.

Anyone else amused at the stupid financial decisions your friends make? BRB making $40k a year, leasing a BMW, borrow money for a boat, have zero savings.

No goofing here.

We only spend around $60-70 at costco and thats just grocery stuff we would normally buy on a weekly basis at the store, but get it discounted in bulk.

You might lol at my costco almond butter but for $10 its double the size of store containers and only $2 more. So I win.

Frugal I can admire. But cheap is just cheap.
