Millennial unemployment is at 11.5% . . . nearly triple the total U.S. unemployment

Worse still, even many millennials with jobs are just scraping by. According to a recent Accenture study, 51% of 2014-2015 graduates are underemployed–holding jobs that don’t require the college degrees they’ve earned–and that number has risen precipitously over the past 15 years. The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) found similar troubles among millennials whose academic careers terminated with high school diplomas; underemployment among that group stood at 33.7% last year, compared with 26.8% in 2007.

Making matters worse, according to EPI researchers, is the fact that the U.S. workforce used to be much richer in skilled positions (like dental hygienist or electrician) that offered health benefits and some sort of retirement plan to workers without college degrees or even high school diplomas. But these days, many are like Miller–working as food servers, cashiers, and in other low-wage jobs without benefits or overtime

Millenials were sold a bill of goods that can't be delivered. In today's world going to college isn't as much about the job you are going to get coming out of college, but your upward mobility within that company once you have some experience. The idea that you are going to go to college for 4 years and come out with a $50K job offer waiting for you is outdated and its skewing people's minds and expectations. Some will even go with NO job because they feel so entitled to the $50K/year job and even though they are a BURDEN to most employers because they have no experience. I will repeat...being WORTHLESS to an employer would be an improvement for most recent grads...they are literally a BURDEN to the employer until they can get trained up and gain some experience.

I swallowed my pride after college and took a $9/hour low level administrative job. Its the best decision I ever made, as I grew from there. My degree became an asset as my career blossomed, but not before.

Dental hygiene requires college degree. I know two girls who are going/have went to school for that.

I got my degree from a strong university with a good reputation in the Philly area. I started with a job that I probably could have landed without my degree, but used that time to develop my technical skills.

Those 3 years of experience plus the strong university degree was enough to propel my career since then.

I just have a feeling some millennials come out with lofty expectations and raise the white flag when they realize that things aren't as easy as they would have imagined coming out of college. I can just imagine that many in the class I graduated with would have been too proud to take the job I took right of school. And this was in 2010 when the economy was completely in the chitter.

unless something changed in the last decade, this isn't true - it's a two year program to get licensed that focuses purely on that job

-buy a house

isn't this the case usually for younger age groups? most adults in their 30s and above you would hope are employed, have families and have legitimate careers.

Came to post this...pick any time period and check unemployment in the 2-3 years after college or from 18-25. I bet it's similar.

Interesting. Actually now that I think about it the girl I know who is a dental hygenist did only go to community college and I think for less than 4 years.

I know a girl who is going to Temple currently to be a dental hygenist though, not sure for how long.

she may have just gone to college for the experience, but i know some hygienists who didn't need a 4 year degree - but it may have changed, im basing this off people ive known for a while now and we all know how the government likes to stifle business and make things generally more difficult than they need to be

Crap, before it became the cause of the day, the damn Dakota Pipeline was paying BIG money to people with no experience. Guys were getting six figures to drive a dump truck. Wal-Mart was paying $23/hr to start because they didn't have enough people to cover the demand. Yea you had to travel to ND - but live cheap and pay off student loans in a year or two come back with a down payment for a house.

it used to be that way in Alberta too, before the oil price crashed in 2014. wish i was of age when the oil business was booming in early to mid 00s. would have worked 3 hard years and set myself up for life. Tim Hortons (Coffee Chain) was paying obscene amounts of money for cashiers....

but these jobs seem far and few in between. remember an old high school teacher telling me back in the day, you would graduate high school on the Friday and have gainful employment on Monday.

Minus the pension, you can do the same thing. Baby boomers didn't pay for 100/month cell phones, 100/month cable subscriptions, streaming services, cars that cost a years wages, and all inclusive resort vacations.

Buy a smallish house, drive an older self maintained car, take cheaper vacations, and don't have all the newest tech everywhere and you too can raise a family on a 'menial labour job'. With most companies, you can even accumulate a decent retirement account if you budget well.
