2017 Eclipse Chat Thread

Traveling to see the total eclipse, or just following from home, post ITT.

We are driving south in just a few hours. From the news coverage I've seen we may be crazy. Backed up traffic and lines at gas stations yesterday.

Our main motivation (other than just seeing it ourselves) is that it seems like the kind of thing that you will remember later good or bad. "Hey kid...remember when we did that road trip to go see the eclipse?"

Have a cooler with food, water, and TP (just in case).

Not aiming for one of the main hot spots, but on the northern edge of totality.

Stay safe fellow eclipse chasers.




Gotta go finish packing up. No telling how internet access may be.

I'm pumped as sh!t, but a lot of that is because I'm in the path of totality so I get all all the wonder of it, assuming whether is nice(knock on wood).

Here are some of the intriguing sights to look for if you are in the path of totality.

Diamond Ring Effect

About 15 seconds before the moon completely covers the sun, only a tiny crescent of sunshine is left and the sun’s faint upper atmosphere, or corona, begins to come into view. Around this time, the sliver of bright sunlight transitions into a stunning burst of radiance concentrated in one region along the sun’s edge. Together with the corona circling the disk, the burst of light creates what’s known as the diamond ring effect.



In the final seconds before and after totality, a series of white glowing dots of sunlight known as Baily’s beads, named for astronomer Francis Baily, appear along the edge of the moon’s silhouette. This jewel-like display is formed by sunlight seeping through the deep valleys and craters along the edge of the lunar disk. Viewers can expect each of these dazzling beads to last only a fraction of a second before they wink out and the sun goes totally dark.


Just as the moon begins to totally cover up the sun, titanic flares called solar prominences become visible, peeking out from the edge of the darkening disk. Prominences are anchored to the sun’s surface and loop for millions of miles into space. They can only be spotted by sky-watchers on the ground during the moments near totality.

The Corona

The precious few moments of totality are when the moon fully covers the sun, and it’s the only time people on Earth can see the corona without special equipment. This outer part of the solar atmosphere extends for millions of miles into space, but it is normally drowned out by the glare of the star’s denser surface.


In addition to bringing the sun’s corona into view, totality makes the surrounding sky so dark that viewers can see stars and planets during the day. On August 21, Venus and Jupiter will appear the brightest, as they will sit nearly halfway across the open sky during the eclipse. Mars and Mercury will be much closer to the sun, so will be fainter but still visible.

You can also look for the bright “dog star” Sirius in the low southwestern sky, as well as orange-hued Capella to the right of Venus and the twin stars Castor and Pollux just above the planet.

I definitely feel lucky. Get to walk less than 200 yards from my front door and enjoy totality from a big field across the road. If it's as awe-inspiring as I think it'll be I'll probably be traveling out to the middle of the country for totality in 2024.

my cousin shot one of those laser pointers into his eye for over a minute and his eye still fine. i regularly look into the sun and my eyes r fine too. just lol at paying 100's for stupid glasses you dont even need.

Ah...

So no big deal so far.

Traffic was light until the 71/75 turnoff. Brief backup there.

About 7 hours from home to hotel (Louisville) with stops for gas and lunch. Most annoying thing was the knife I grabbed to slice my apple is dull and flimsy.

Driving about 3 hours away and I'll be on the northern edge of totality where it will last 50 seconds. Driving from TN to NC. Leaving out at about 3am to hopefully make it to my destination by sunrise to get a parking spot. Then waiting forever.

I just hope I can get a spot at 7am.

What food/snacks are you guys bringing? I was gonna go get lunchables but you guys might have tastier options.

Ah, we are well stocked:

- potato dosa & chana curry (mostly for me)
- lots of veggies and pita w/hummus
- grapes, couple of apples
- ham/cheese/peanut butter/bread...IOW sandwich stuff
- quinoa salad & lentil salad (also mostly me)
- almonds, dates & freeze dried fruit
- individual snacks...fiber bars, granola bars, pretzels & cheese, peanut butter crackers
- trail mix and Chicago style popcorn from Costco (him and the kid)

First stop this morning...

Him: I'm hungry. What have?

Me: List stuff...

Him: blah blah blah...Burger King.

So he got a breakfast sandwich w/hash browns and coffee. About 2 hours after having waffles & coffee at home.

Stopped at Chipotle for lunch.

Just left with the kid to go out for dinner.

Sigh...
