Actually its possible. If youre a journeyman in IL which takes 5 years you make at minimum 45 an hour. Add in overtime which is time and a half and double time on sundays and there you go. No OT for a carpenter at 46.50 an hour is 96k

Not a tradie but some of my friends who are do make over 100k or close to it pretty easily, and I live in city with a pretty low cost of living.

Also know two real estate agents who make ridiculous money, one has already cleared 400k this year. That's insane money considering you just need a GED and pass some silly state exams even a dipchit can pass (one of the dumbest people I know is a RE agent, but a chitty one)

For union sites in Australia, a tradie can pull that sort of money no worries. A lot of the time it matters more where you work rather than what you actually do. Once you start looking at FIFO work, 120k is nothing. The sort of work takes a huge toll on your life though. You can't be a family man and work FIFO.

tradies who work lots of overtime definitely do make that much money, but most of them are older than 25.

If you are lucky enough to get into a union in NYC, you easily make that much. The lowest pay level for those working on the construction of skyscrapers in NYC goes to General Laborers (requires zero training) at 42/h. The carpenters make 60/h plus 39/h in benefits. Than there is overtime which is time and a half, and is almost always available, and all weekend hours are automatically time and a half. Soooooo being a tradie in NYC is extremely legit provided you are in a union. There is a large under 30 crowd making this money. I worked as a General laborer 5 years ago when I was 23 for a year.

FYI, no way your average tradie in the uk gets close to 100k US. I worked with window fitters, a middle of the road trade, about 10 years ago and the lead man in the crew was getting no more than 45k US. May have gone up a little since then but those were 12 hour days as well.

Only way you will get close to those numbers here is to have certifications to the moon and back and almost certainly be working for yourself. You won't be 25 either lol

Obviously, which is why I stated these figures are from Australia. The Australian equivalent of 120k US is 156k AU. I work with Electricians who make up to 160k gross

Let's be realistic here. Not every tradie is going to achieve that type of pay. But union backed trades are definitely paying that amount.

The point is that even the Laborers in NYC make 42/h. The people with actual trades make up to and over 100/h before overtime which is 1.5x the hourly.

It's not for pussies. I broke a finger tip during the year I did it, but I netted 800 a week paid leave for the month I was out.

I would never argue that being a tradie is worth the physical exhaustion, but it's definitely a decent alternative if you aren't determined to go STEM and don't want the college debt.
The money can be fantastic in trades, but you have all these naive miscers who assume they will be making 300k a year at a white collar job, and therefore don't see the money in trades as good enough.
That being said, even though the money was great for a 23 year old kid partying in NYC, I noped out after a year.

The other part about being in a union as a tradie is the ability to retire with a full pension after 25-30 years, and also the money that goes into your annuity for every hour you work.
However, non unions have become competitive in NYC, which could change things in the next decade depending on how everything plays out.

In Australia those numbers are more than achievable, and would attract less tax than a normal wage.

The exchange rate doesn't matter, if they are living in Australia they are spending in Australian dollars as well. Unless they live in Sydney, purchasing power is about the same.
