My misc bretheren and... sisteren(?), I want you to know you're not alone:

I don't think turkey is all that great.

I don't HATE turkey, I just think it's WILDLY overrated.

brb takes up a huge amount of freezer space
brb then takes up a huge amount of fridge space
brb then takes up a huge amount of oven space
brb takes HOURS in the oven
brb coordinate the entire meal around when the bird is going to be done, bc god forbid it overcooks

When you cook the turkey PERFECTLY, it tastes... fine. Pretty tasty with Gravy on top and Mashed on the side, but I've never had a piece of Turkey that can compare to the HBB of Holiday meats, Ham.

I know this is a minority opinion, but most turkey tastes bland and I think a lot of people eat it for the nostalgia/tradition rather than the taste. If it's so good, why do you guys only eat it one/two days a year?

Agreed. When we do Thanksgiving, I always smoke a ham.

Turkey is just kind of meh. I'd almost rather just have chicken.

Smoked turkey legs are OK. Otherwise, totally meh, very dry. Probably better if barded, i.e. covered in bacon or prosciutto or something.

My fam makes salmon as well as turkey every year. I usually have more of that. There is something to be said for eating the turkey when it's freshly carved and juicy (if properly cooked), though.

True, I will take chicken over turkey any time. But its a nice change every so often and its tradition.

If you dont want it, make something else.

But it sounds like you need something to rage about so I guess this works.

I smoke a few smaller birds with different seasonings. Regular baked turkey isn't anything special but poultry in general soaks up a lot of flavorings so it really depends on how and what its cooked with.

I usually do 1 with Cajun seasoning and injection and the other 1 with an herbed butter.

Absolutely must brine them for 24 hours before cooking.
