Taking career leap!

I come to share my situation misc.

I've long worked in companies from small to enormous worldwide enterprises. I was approached by a prior boss to be employee #2 of a subsidiary, he is employee #1. Basically this company wants to start offering additional services, alternative services from their normal business offerings to their existing client base. In doing so, they brought on my old boss to run it. I'm coming in with technical expertise to be the lead architect to build out these technical solutions and services to these clients. This is all new and we have the client base, we just need to capture them and get them to buy our services.

This is much different from where I came in and knew exactly what I had to do day in day out. I'm going to have to travel to get business while also acting as primary technical architect once they buy in. I am all of the feels. Excited, anxious, nervous, feel the pressure that this can either blow up big and I'm going to make it or it can fail and I'll have to move onto the next.

I've never done anything like this before and I must succeed as I have a family to provide for. Sure I could keep going and working for large established places and be a spec of sand in the grand scheme of things, but I am breaking out and giving this a shot.

Update,

So it's been about 10 months since I have been here and...:
-We've purchased two other companies
-We now have ~10 FTE and access to hundreds of 1099s


Our pipeline is HUGE and if we land even half the work we will need to hire a chit ton more people. It's lookin good boyos and extremely happy I made the leap.

There's definitely been long weeks where I am working from 6:00am to about 10:00pm due to crunchtime and deadlines. I truly love it though and my boss is very much work/life balance so after putting in hard work or if I am traveling/working weekends I get comp time during the week.

Since we've added more staff it's a bit easier and less on me as I delegate tasks and work to others. I truly like what I am doing though as our clients are underserved and need some help. We are definitely strengthening their security posture and overall IT maturity, just got off a phone with one of our first clients and after years of bad audits, they just had their first since we came in and the auditors complemented them stating they are ahead of where a lot of their peers are.

Wow, that really does sound rewarding. As someone who works in IT, sometimes I definitely feel like the work I'm doing is unrewarding. Consulting is one direction I want to aim for in the next 10 years, and seems like you really made it work and took it to the next level by starting your own business. Congrats

Thanks! Ya, switched to consulting and it's nice because you're brought in most of the time because a C-level wants some change. Easier to have people do things when you got their weight behind your direction. Spent all of my career being internal IT and always ran into friction among other groups or being at the mercy of the business.

Congrats OP. Your happiness and positivity is really coming through in your posts. Can tell you are loving it. Energy is endless and hours fly by when you are loving what you do.

I start a new job Wednesday. Sold my business early this year and have been a depressed rotting slug for months now. This is an amazing opportunity and definitely my comeback. Wish my luck!

dont consider it a risky venture. consider it a chance to make something of yourself. seems like there is no set in stone gauge of success, so you will have to rely on yourself as an assessor of if youre really giving it your all.
