Why do a lot of American parents think it’s good to force their kids out at 18?

To teach them “responsibility” or some cope for being selfish and cheap?

Asian parents take care of their kids for as long as possible, even pay their college in full and those kids turn out better educated and wealthier than your average American forced to do everything on their own out of high school.

Because most parents were out on their own by that age. Times have certainly changed

I chose to move out at 18. Parents would've let my younger brother stay forever but he finally moved out with his GF at 25

This. People my age had parents that could go get a factory job at 18 and not only be completely self sufficient, but thrive. For the most part people have adjusted, and the only kids being kicked out 18 fall into one of the following categories.

1. Parents can't afford to take care of them past 18
2. The kid is a fuk up, and has to go
3. Parent doesn't want to take care of them past 18

It should almost be mandatory at this point. Way too many man-children that complain about "adulting" in their mid-twenties nowadays.

It builds character and teaches life skills that are not learned when you have mommy and daddy as a security blanket. I will help my kids financially after 18 as long as they are furthering thier edication in some way, but they are going to learn the responsibilities that come with living on thier own.

Because it worked for them when they were 18. It's still possible but not as easy as it was in the past.

Because Asian parents are controlling af are make them get As no matter what the cost to their social life.

At 18 they are adults and need to learn to look after themselves and become men and women in the world.

Western parents also don't expect to move in with their kids when they get old and let them have their own lives (in most cases).

Wow, why would you WANT to stay home past 18? I left when I was 18 and never "lived" there again. Obviously I'd come back for holidays and such. But everyone I went to school with was itchin to turn 18 so they could get the fuk out of their parents house, get their own place and start living life on their terms.

OP - I'm going to tell my daughter she's done with living with me at 18, and if she needs money she's going to have to twerk for it.

I agree. I have a hard time even visiting family after 18. I am 30 and if I visit for the holidays, they still treat me like I am a teenager. I would have hated to live there any longer because I would have felt like I wasn't progressing in life.

Guarantee all those parents neglected in nursing homes were the ones who forced their kids out at 18.

I moved out at 17, I was a piece of chit growing up and almost made my parents split. I did them a favour by giving them space -- I moved back in for a couple years for college and have been out on my own since. Life is unforgiving and not everyone should be babied through life.

Why do you act like 'Asian' is a homogeneous group? It isn't. And what do you mean by 'average American' - do you think that this is a homogeneous group? It isn't.

You should put more effort into your posts if you expect any actual discussion.

Do they though? Don't a majority of kids these days live at home still at 18 or end up in college with the help of their parents? Where did you hear they always try and kick their kids out

Asian here. Yeah, but nothing is that easy, or for free. Unless one has a severe physical limitation, or mental illness, most Asian parents will force you to get a job. At least the ones in my neighborhood.

Asian parents take care of their kids for as long as possible
Most Western parents don't toss their kids out of home at 18. Across the West, about 1/3 of people 18-34yo are living with their parents, about 1/3 are married de facto or de jure, and about 1/3 are living on their own or with friends.

Asian parents take care of their children a long time, but they also have high expectations of them. As a Chinese-Aussie friend of mine put it: "You can fail, just don't come home." So it's high-care but high-expectations, vs lower-care and lower-expectations. Look up "tiger mum" some time - hint, she's not blonde-haired and blue-eyed.

Asian cultures also have the expectation that children will look after their parents when they're elderly, caucasian families not so much.

I really like what my friends parents did. If he continues education then he could live at home. If he worked instead (which he chose to) they charged him rent. That rent was put aside for him for future education, or when he bought a house (he used some for both).

Forced him to either go to school or worked and helped put him a little bit ahead by forced saving while the rest of us pissed all of our money away.

And that's how you become your parent's retirement plan.

It is a very noble thing for parents to put their children through college if they can afford it. The vast majority of Asian parents do this and hang it over their children's head forever. The real plan is for you to live at home, get a great education and become filthy rich, marry someone equally well off, pop out babies, parents move in with you both so they can take care of the kids while you and your partner work forever so the grandparents can retire in style.

Not always, but usually.
