You have 25 horses, and you want to pick the fastest 3 horses out of those 25. In each race, only 5 horses can run at the same time. What is the minimum number of races required to find the 3 fastest horses without using a stopwatch?

5x5 then 1x5? but what if you accidentally put the 3 fastest in 1 race at the beginning. You just eliminated 2 of the fastest horses cause they were in the same race as the fastest.

So, I would have 5 horses run.

I would take the winner, and have him race again with 4 other horses.

I would take the 1st and second and have them race against 3 other horses.

I would take the top 3 and race them against 2 other horses.

I would take the top 3 and race them against 2 other horses.

What if the top 3 overall horses are all in the very first heat of 5? Then the true 2nd and 3rd would not be represented in the final race, and the process would not determine the top 3.

Yea I was thinking you take the 5 fastest of the the first five races, but now thinking about it, you can have one heat of 5, and another, you would think take the winners of both, BUTTT, the fastest in one heat could be slower than the slowest of another.. **** that ****s everything up for me..

you're not looking for the top 3...

if the fastest was in that heat, then he moves on. doesnt matter if the 2nd or 3rd over all was eliminates in round 1
