Where should I look to move in the US?

Some guidance:
- Don't like heavy snow every winter, but do like seasons.
- Don't like super hot/humid, but I can handle it better than snow.
- Should be moderate, or lean conservative politically, because I'll be looking for a decent woman to start a family.
- Prefer a smaller town community feel where I can get to know the locals (at least to some degree).
- Have the option to go into the city sometimes, and I may need to since I work in tech.
- Like lakes, mountains, rolling hills (over beaches, flat midlands etc.).

Right now leaning towards NC, SC, VA areas.

I live in Columbia, SC and its very hot in the summer and not much winter. Snows once every few years. Good cost of living and 2 hours to mountains one way and 2 hours to coast the other way. We have 2 big lakes that are fun. But its hot and humid.

I think you have to go a little north of us to get a little cooler and more seasonal. Greenville-Spartanburg in the upstate of SC is very nice, up and coming, very good jobs, low cost of living, and conservative politically - you should check out that area. Foothills and mountains visible in the distance and an easy trip. Its considered a great economy right now there too and high paying tech jobs. Greenville also has a small town feel even with a metro population approaching a million people. Really cool Main Street entertainment district. It matches your description exactly.



Raleigh-Durham in NC is also a booming tech haven but is more liberal and does not have the foothills of Greenville.

From what you listed sounds like SC or NC really would be a great fit for you. Greenville (it's currently expanding like crazy), Charleston, Asheville, and Charlotte are all some good cities based off what you're looking for. Are you married? I swear I've been all over and SC has some of the hottest girls in the country, people from out of state always notice this.

If you want a smaller community that's not too small, look into Wilmington, NC. Its bomb as hell, decent COL, and right by the ocean. I'd move there in a second if my job field was stronger there but it's definitely not a hub for it.

Good thread. I live in moderate part of PA and I like it, but winters make me depressed. Went to school down south and loved it but summers are brutal. NC sounds like a good compromise.

I work in tech so could remote work anywhere. The NE is becoming insane politically, I fear for my son becoming brainwashed even in PA.

That is the wrong side of the country if you want to avoid stupid hot humidity.

No state income tax
Pro 2nd amendment state

live on some land and option to go into cities like Knoxville and Nashville
cheap real estate and overall living expenses relative to the nation as a whole.

I was thinking about Tennessee because I do like seasons, but ended up choosing Florida for many of same reasons (no state tax, good gun laws, conservative areas) because I like being on the gulf and want a sailboat
