The 9-5 rut is hard to break

Doesnt really hit you growing up until you've done it for a few years and looked back on your life and realized that you haven't really done the things you've wanted to do. There's still tons of time in your life, however the security is something that is difficult to overlook.

I literally can't imagine having kids right now and being forced to keep doing the 8-5 cause you have a family to take care of.

8-5 Monday-Friday? Consider yourself blessed at 29 years old. There are a lot of 29 year olds, with a degree, who are still waiting tables and working retail on holidays and weekends.

I agree.

Stable 9-5 where I "work" 5 hours/week. Rot the other 35 but I need to be present in the office either way.

Definitely going to go crazy at this rate. Need more incentives (money) or a new routine. We'll see what gives first.

It's your fault that you're not doing the things you want in life. You have to make them a priority, dont blame your job. If you get home after work and rot, then spend your weekend drinking some beer and rotting, as most of the US does that's not because you work a 9-5.

Tried to get out of 9-5 for about 3-4 years and only finally pulled the trigger just over a year ago. Some habits die hard after 10 years in corporate.

Easier to just start and stay as an entrepreneur than go to 9-5 and try and switch

Why do 9-5 people complain. Retail is even worse did that chit for a while. Fukin chitty hours and work on weekends HELL NO.

I am very happy having an engineering office job from 6-2. Gives me plenty of time to do something during the day if not I can just nap and recover.

9-5 + consumerism will lock you into a life of mediocrity and failed potential. Do whatever you can to work towards your dreams outside of work. Might mean less time watching movies, drinking with the boyos, or playing video games but it will pay off.

I decided to return to college in my late 20s after squandering 5 years in a 9-5. The job I'm going for offers lots of flexibility.... shifts any time of the day, 3 months on - 3 months off, Part-Time and livable salary, overtime and massive salary, lateral movement, scheduled pay increases..That will make it even easier to work on my side stuff while making tons of money.

This^

The issue mainly, is that unless you are fresh out of college, quitting the 9-5 is setting yourself back probably 3-5 years. Your startup isnt going to pay equal or more than your salary right off the bat. So if you have an apartment, kids, mortgage, car note, etc that still need to be paid, you better hope your gig pays those bills.

Probably better off saving 12 months worth of expenses (LMFAO good luck 99% of america) and work your startup after your 9-5 so when you're ready to quit and go at it full time, you have that year of savings to float you.

I keep saying employers need to give us the option to work 10 hour days 4 days a week or 8 hour days 5 days a week.

Getting out of 9-5 doesn't sound easy by any means. But you can make the process easier. Living in a smaller house, Not buying unneeded things, not buying a new car, etc. The more things you get rid of, the more your dream of leaving 9-5 becomes reality. The way I see it is, create a passive income. My goal is to have passive income to where I can at least work part time. Working part time wouldn't be so bad. Think of all the things you can do working only 25 hours a week.

If all of the above isn't possible, you last case scenario should be to find an employer who will allow you to work 4 days a week, even if it's 10 hour days. I'd trade 2 extra hours for another off day.

College is a dream lol. I mean engineering is hard, but that's all you gotta worry about.

That said, it's what you make of it. After college can be 1000 times better. Like CaliSuper said, 9-5 + Consumerism is what kills you. When you graduate, stay away from new cars, clothes, jewelry, etc. You can have fun. Buy a cheap car for $5k and pay it off quick. Don't worry about buying an overly expensive house, just do research to get a good deal. Never spend money on credit cards, unless you can pay them off. There are tons of hobbies that don't require a lot of money that are fun.

I'm about to buy a used Lexus for about $2800, 160k miles but they're very reliable. Gonna pay that sht off quick. I could get a new car for $15,000 like most college students but no thanks. I hate debt.

lol, we're talking about real careers here not some retail job you worked for spending money in college.

not everyone gets the 6-2 flexibility either. many do 7-7, add a commute in there and it's easy for 14 hours of your day to be gone and then this cycle gets repeated over years until people find themselves as a fat baldcel driving a BMW to cope.

also, it's def not healthy to sit in a cubicle for 8+ hours a day getting stressed over looking at screens.

as others have said, it's a mediocre way to live, "easy way out"

Yeah man I was in your boat a few years ago in uni.

When your looking for a job just try your best to make sure you know 100% of what your job will entail, what your responsible for, and try your best to make sure you know exactly who you will be working with daily.

I'm finding out employers are more deceptive than job seekers

The 9-5 does suck though thanks to the crazy repetitiveness.

LOL...A 9-5 office drone is the pinnacle of working conditions.

People have been slaving away and dying by the millions for generations dreaming of a 9-5 existence...

H*ll 99% of the world STILL dreams of being a 9-5 office drone...But by all means spend your time chasing after "fulfilling" and "meaningful" work

This society needs a plague, famine or massive world war to realign expectations and reality...

Im not anti -entrepreneur I just LOL at the people that moan and complain about how miserable 9-5 lifestyle is...
