Why have some people become so anti-college these days?

College is useful if you major in the right subject or get the right certification after graguation. College grads. get paid much more than non-college graduates on average. Many seem to hate college for no reason.

If you don't want, don't go, but why bother what others do?

I don't think they are. I think they are just realizing college isn't some magical one size fits all thing for advancing in life. People are seeing the business nature of college, how much debt they are putting our youth into and taking a harder look at whether college is the answer. Don't think it hurts at all to give people other options and not look down upon people who make a great living with their hands. Electricians, plumbers, welders and the lot make bank.

Construction and Arborists are even more insane and doubt you need much education for those.

College is almost a necessity for most people who want to earn more in most countries, it just so happens that American tuition costs fuk students over.

Most degrees in the US are worthless for this reason; hard sciences, law etc excluded.

Because you are forced to pay 10s of thousands of dollars, get saddled with debt as a teenager, to go learn a bunch of useless garbage and have ideologies shoved down your throat, yet for some reason it's still a requirement if you want a decent paying job these days

Unless you are studying STEM at a top school, getting a degree is just a useless, expensive formality.

college is a waste of time, energy and money FOR MOST PEOPLE!

your early 20's are probably better spent getting real labor/trade skills like carpentry, electric, plumbing FOR MOST PEOPLE!

however, if you're actually bright (good at math, writing, whatever) then you should aim for getting a 4 year degree, then masters.

the problem is that there really isn't an equal opportunity these days for college grads. a liberal arts major is working at Starbucks post college while an Electrical engineering major is probably working for a good tech industry giant/firm (and in this economy, sometimes even the STEM majors have a really tough time finding work, unless they're programmers). Then you have "pre-med" students barely scraping by and not even following through with their desired field of practice.

college is a waste of resources if you're not cut out to be there (and that goes for easily half the people in the world)

Because people waste a massive amount of money on college when they are studying a bull**** major. Anything that isn't STEM is literally a waste of time and money. With the only exception being you've got money and time to burn.


Also college is too cheap and too easy. Too many people are getting undergraduate degrees which has drastically reduced their worth. IMO anything less then 85-90% should be a failing grade. And college should be harder to pay for. IE only give student loans to people with a 4.0 in high school. Every else should either be able to pay for college out-right or either get an athletic or academic scholarship.




I'm not anti-college at all. I'm anti stupid people. And unfortunately the majority of people going to/graduating college are really stupid. brb 50K in debt to be a barista with an art degree.

I feel like this topic has been rehashed to death...

There are about 20 majors (merging specialist degree's into their parent degree) with a solid ROI. Everything else isn't.

People have been taught by retards like you that they are a loser if they don't go to college. However, they have also been taught to do what they love and follow their dreams.

This results in a bunch of people with bachelors degrees in sociology with 40k in debt becoming barista's.

College has lots of perks , I’m getting my second degree now for cheap. Had a great job when I finished school first time round. It slowed down so I took the opportunity to advance my education. Just recently received another strong job offer. Education opens doors of opportunity. Trade schools have their perks too.

The majority of people do not go to college for one of these degrees. Further, the vast majority of people are intellectually incapable of pursuing those degrees. Instead they rack up massive debt to go into a field that pays less if they decided to instead focus on a trade

How about a ban bet, if I can prove to a mod that I have a math degree, or that I can do more than 95lbs for 6 reps(LOL) you get banned, if not I get banned. I prefer barbell bench, so can I do that instead?

I tried college until I realized it wasn't really necessary for the area I wanted to go in: IT.

That was over 10 years ago, and mind you, I'm not talking about programming, which yes college seems fitting in that case.

I work in an IT position and though, its more of an operational position, I make decent money (where I live).

I think the scam college pulls though really is around non STEM fields. Positions that you could learn on the job or in some short term school (Business, Accounting, Art...).

College anymore is about the job security and relevance of the staff... and the hysteria they weave to convince the masses.
