Only watched the first few minutes, so here's the story

Apparently there's a guy who accompanies St Nick during Christmas and he's supposedly black from the soot in the chimneys

People have taken it a step further and added big lips and afro wigs to the costume

I fully understand why black people would be pissed off

well it's kind of messy because the character's been around for centuries and was based off blacks being a caricature at best insofar as people living in the Low Countries were concerned. But obviously you nowadays have a substantial black Dutch population there so... not exactly worth tussling with people over, though.

It's not during Christmas, it's on 6th of December and called Saint-Nicholas or Sinterklaas. It's been a tradition here for decades and blacks can gtfo back to where they came from if they don't like it. I am from Belgium BTW.

It was a war based on treason and defense of the indefensible institution of slavery. Anyone in the 21st century that defends it as part of our "traditions and history" is a piece of ****. Not sure what u are talking about but when u start removing things from history, dangerous things might happen. I don't see why taking down or not taking down a statue of Leopold 1 would help any of the victims of the things that happened in Congo. Taking it down would only make it so that people will forget what happened, is that what victims would really want? Same things can be said for slavery.

This is a complicated issue and im not going to pretend to be an authority on it but my instinct after watching the first 30 seconds of the video was they should stop the practice of blackface because its 2018 and its pretty obvious why it would offend some people. Im a white man who took an African American History class in college that told me more about black history in one semester than i learned in 12 grades of school. So im not even going to attempt to argue with people who would be me if i had not taken that class. When you see the post cards of hundreds of white people surrounding a black man hanging from a tree it drives home something i cant express to you with words on a forum. Blackface was used in America to make a mockery of black people to dehumanize them. No the Dutch didnt do anything to blacks. No they dont need to feel bad about race relations. Yes they need to acknowledge that with snapchat, twitter, fb etc they should stop the blackface practice because this is bigger than just their country.

Robert E Lee is admired for how he conducted himself before, during, and after the war.

Our ancestors, who lived much closer to the history in question, erected those statues. It's presumptuous that a twit like you can come along many decades later and pronounce not only your view of history superior, but that our ancestors were wrong to admire these men and use that as justification for vandalizing and destroying these statues.

It's especially wrong for people who are nothing more than 1st or 2nd generation immigrants to tell Americans that our history is not to your liking, and so we must change it.
