anyone here build their own furniture?

I like minimalist/contemporary style furniture, it seems like building your own simple furniture could be a fun hobby and a cool way to have some unique stuff for cheap, anyone ever do this?

I think building a platform bed frame or something would be cool, maybe a writing desk.

They've put all of the old episodes of the New Yankee Workshop online, lots of furniture projects, lots to learn and a lot of it looks easier after you've seen it done. Plus Norm Abram is the undisputed GOAT.

Also, if you haven't got tools look for a community workshop in your area. If you're lucky enough to have one it can be a cheap way to get into it all and learn a lot. If not, estate sales are a great source of cheap power tools. I've seen table saws and drill presses go for like $100. srs.

I've done some tables, end tables, headboards and stuff like that. Your best bet on a bed would be to make the head and foot boards your self and use an iron frame to support the mattress and box spring. Hardly anyone will know the difference and it will make things a million times easier

Built quite a few pieces of furniture over the years and have a few I'm working on now. It'll be cheaper in materials to build your own furniture and usually better quality, but you do have to factor in the upfront cost of the tools you'll need to build it. If you just want to build a few end tables it may not be worth it to spend a lot of money on saws, sanders, routers, etc.

I've built a few pieces for my house, an entertainment center, 6' tall standalone bookshelf, a couple end tables, and most recently a frame for our bed. Definitely MUCH cheaper than purchasing similar quality if you already have tools. I would have easily spent $500+ to get a bedframe comparable to the one I built with about $100 in materials.

I ended up making my entire living room minus the couches because I could not find anything that didnt look ghey as hell and wasnt $2000 for a coffee table.

Only pic i have is the fish tank, made this with wallnut and curly maple.

Seems like it would be a fun hobby but I don't know if I'd build stuff to put in my own house lol, purely because I don't have a background in this and I'll never be as good as the true craftsmen out there


But I'm pretty big into furniture, we have two Stickley pieces in our living room. Every piece of furniture in my house is handmade out of Birch / Cherry / Walnut

Edit: Actually three Stickley pieces, forgot about the chair

Huh, I think I could do that. I've seen those bare bones iron bed frames, wouldn't be hard to just use that as a base for wood headboards/etc.

I'd want to do a platform bed though. So no box spring.

I made few kitchens, for myself and some friends, it is not hard, all You need is to find a kitchen You like (on Internet) than drow that (sketch) and then order parts so You can asebmbly... If anybody interested, drop a message or post here so I can give You more details, but it is very simple, You can make a bedroom too very easily. Bathrooms are a bit more complicated, I think because materials used in bathromss are aa bit more complicated dor noob to work with, just my 2 cents...

Used a butcherblock top from Lowes and some drawers from Amazon to assemble my computer desk. Planning on more projects in the future. It's not bad if you're going for a the farmhouse/rustic aesthetic.
