You forgot to enable multi vote, would have voted 1 and 4 (no homo).
I have a shotgun with birdshot in it since I worry about over penetration, but in4answers from MFC members.

For my apartment my Glock 19 with a 500 Lumen light attached is good enough for me. I could easily see the argument for a shotgun in a house though. If that doesn't work I got an AR + weapon light also.
I picked shotgun BTW.

They both have their merits. Handguns are nice and light and easy to get aimed in a hurry. Shotguns have spread so no need to have perfect aim to be effective. I keep the 12 gauge by me because I take out my contacts at night and I'm can't see chit without em

You could make a case for either, but I'd vote for a handgun since shooting ranges are more friendly to handguns than shotguns. Most indoor ranges don't allow buckshot or birdshot to be used either and therefore you are left with expensive slugs to practice with. You really don't want to shoot 100 slugs during a practice session at the range. A handgun is more concealable and portable when walking around outside or inside too. Sometime I don't want to cause a big alarm with the neighbors when inspecting the outside during the middle of the night so I'm not carrying my 12-gauge out with me in plain view. It's usually a Glock 17. It's also harder to conceal a shotgun when answer the front door for anybody.

Pistol for me. It's much easier to maneuver than my shotgun is but that one has a longer barrel meant for hunting.
Those saying they prefer the shotgun because the spread is wide enough you need perfect aim; have you ever shot yours at a paper target within 10-15 feet to see what kind of pattern it throws? Depending on the choke, you may be surprised at the results.

Beararms,
You may want to watch some of the YouTube videos on this man. Paul Harrell has some good ones. The pattern spread at 7-10 yards (the extreme far end of home defense) is like 6". It's way, way, way easier to miss at defense distance with a shotgun than people believe.

I voted shotgun but I have a glock19 with a 15 round mag full of JHP's and an Inforce flashlight on it. Rather would have a flashlight than a laser though on my glock.
But ideally a shotgun with a flashlight mount would be perfect. Cant go wrong with g19 though

For me:
shotgun > AR > handgun
This is based on my experience/confidence with each. I think every home should at minimum have a 12g pump shotgun in it. It's a simple, cheap and versatile firearm.

Do most people who use a shotgun not have kids and leave it loaded somewhere nearby or do you actually have some sort of large quick access safe? If you are going with something bigger and harder to maneuver with than a pistol though is there any reason to not just use an AR instead?

Also if you didnt pick AR, youre doing it wrong. Unless you have slugs in your shotgun.
