Best degree

Title is kinda stupid but I wasn’t sure where this thread was going^^



I am going back to college to get a degree. I told my advisor I wanted to one in Business Administration with a marketing concentration.

Honestly, I always thought I’d get a “helping degree” like maybe end up being a counselor or something. I see people with these degrees struggling and I hate to say it but I want a degree so that I can be financially stable.

I’m kind of torn as I don’t even know what career I’d want with a business admin degree.

This thread doesn’t really have a single question or specific topic- just hoping for input or advice, or personal stories.

PS- maybe there’s even a different degree I haven’t looked at or something.

^ A nursing degree is a good option if you're the right kind of person, especially since OP mentioned finances being a big part of the decision.

My wife makes six figures with a BSN (minor in psychology) as a RN Supervisor.

Either African American Studies, Women studies, general gender studies. Dance therapy is a very intense field but very rewarding. All of these fields are very rewarding.

I have a lot of things I'd want to do.. probably helping people though haha. I have a couple non profit ideas that I'd love to get started and then there's a place I'd like to open in low population cities.

I did this and they weren't very much help... I did aptitude tests and more personal tests, the aptitude tests qualified me for most things and I was told that I probably wouldn't be a good fit for social service occupations.. It doesn't make sense, but then again it does if I am truly honest with myself. I do want to help people but I can be judgmental and maybe not that nice to everyone.. lol I wouldn't be able to pick and choose my clients.


Is Rajc correct that a business admin degree isn't very good? I don't want to go to school forever. I do want to make decent money- I know that could land me a career that I hate but I'm tired of struggling in life. I have a lot I want to do and I can't make 35k a year at my age and do it. If I were younger I would follow my passion but I would have more time in life.

Business degree is far from garbage.. you can slap a minor on with it and be more valuable though. I’ll agree to that. I’m business, and can easily line up with companies that have lots of headroom to move up the corporate ladder. My buddy, for instance, got employed for GEorgia pacific in logistics with business for around 80k+ right out of college and already has two homes and large companies will also pay to further your education. He got GP to pay for his masters then he jumped companies lmao.. business degrees are probably better for men though because we get the higher wages and management positions. I’d agree to go into nursing possibly, Michelle. You can start at a RN then get educated part time to get a specialty. For instance, get the extra paperwork to be an ultrasound tech, or a radiologist or something. Great stuff

Marketing and Business Admin is near the worst of the business degrees.

Bachelors degrees are about TEACHING a skill. You are looking for a degree that teaches you HOW to do something that most people can't. Something that people/companies NEED to exist.

Business Admin is a good degree AFTER you have a skill and they are looking for someone in management. Marketing is mostly just a SALES job in most companies where they mostly just care about results. If you can do that well you can be a car salesman and save yourself 20k in college bills.

If you're unsure of your career, then a college degree would be a waste of time and money IMO. But if you are really determined to get a degree just for the sake of having a degree, then I don't see anything wrong with a business degree in marketing. Not sure why so many miscers are against a marketing degree, doesn't the success of free enterprise depend upon on how well you market your product?

how much do you have in the bank to go back to school? or do you think the debt is worth it?

in ontario, mature stuents practically get free tuition...and potentially up to 28K/yr from the gov. but even then it's often not worth it when compared to how much money they'll lose after quitting their job. but i highly doubt whatever flyover state you live in is as gracious...

Does this thread not indicate that I am obviously going to put to use any degree I earn? Even if I received a business admin degree, just having a degree would open doors to earning way more than what I am earning now.

If you aren't interested in IT then:

physical therapist assistant
dental hygienist
cosmetology/esthetician
optometry
medical imaging

Basically hands on skilled work that requires some kind of license because the personal physical nature of the work should be protective against automation and the requirement for an education/license reduces competition.

You seem naive in your outlook and expectations. You have already determined that it is 'too late' to follow your passions even though you haven't mentioned what that is. You have yet to mention what you do now for a living and whether a business degree could potentially further your career on the path you are already on. If you aren't using a business degree to further your current position, you are essentially opening yourself up to ENTRY LEVEL jobs and starting from the bottom in basic office settings or in accounting depts, etc.

From the little I can gather from what you wrote, the most logical path would be to focus on the social services/ psychology route with some business classes mixed in or possibly as a minor.
Your schtick sucks and it screams insecurity.
