How did Will Smith fall off?

Since I was a child during the 1990s, Will Smith was always considered "the man." People found him funny and charismatic in Fresh Prince. He won awards for his rap albums. He made box-office hits like Independence Day, Men in Black, and Bad Boys. He made critically acclaimed movies, like Enemy of the State. He got nominated for Oscars for Ali and Pursuit of Happyness. Around the time he made "I am Legend," he was considered the #1 lead actor in Hollywood. People used to say that comedians couldn't talk about Will Smith; there just wasn't a joke you could make about someone so A+.

Then what happened?

His movie "After Earth" bombed hard. Movies like "Concussion," "Bright," and "Focus" were underwhelming. His son might be homosexual.

The primary opinion of Will Smith today is negative.

Poor movie selection then because of that his movies failing to do well which moved him from A list (got to be picky about movies) to B-C tier where people only cast you if you "fit" the role and he doesn't fit much.

For example chose to do wild wild west over the matrix.

I think he got too greedy with his demand for salary. Was paid huge for a few roles and doesn't want to go backwards (which makes no sense imo).

He didn't fall off tho, just does not book the right movies for above reason or probably dealing with other stuff like family.

He did Aladdin just this year, which he actually was great in despite the haters. His new voice role thats coming up looks really funny too. I still think he's one of the top actors and has a damn good range.

Yeah I agree with this. He's still a great actor, but he got greedy for awhile and made some bad choices. He was great in "I am Legend" and "Pursuit of Happiness". I think there are two of this best performances.

Definitely still a top tier actor as far as talent is concerned.

Hes not a great actor, hes just funny. Then he tried to pass the torch to his tard of a son who promptly took said torch and peed it out.

Hes on par with Adam sandler at this point and he just needs to bow out gracefully.

It's probably because the roles he took became more serious. Though he was good, the movies themselves were horrid. That, and a good deal of his movies the last few years were in the attempt to push his monotonous son into his career. Aladdin is like a return to his comedic roles, which he needs to do more of honestly. I'd take 90's Smith roles over mid 00's to late 10's Smith any day.
Just keep on going.

Nah, he's a legitimately well-rounded actor. Movies like "I Am Legend," "Independence Day," "Enemy of the State," "Pursuit of Happyness," "I, Robot" --- all show that he can handle action and drama role.

It's not just luck that he was able to break away after Fresh Prince. Look at so many good actors who began in sitcoms. 90% of the time, those actors go nowhere once the show ends because the audiences will typecast them. Will Smith is the the big one who didn't have the same fate.

It's not that he's a bad actor, it's that the movies he picks generally have sh*t script.

"Ali" is still one of my favorite W. Smith movies.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit softly.

It just isn't his era anymore. He is too old to pull off his 90s/00s cheeky bachelor shtick, and his serious roles don't usually go down well.

He has a psychotic wife and one of the lamest sons in the universe. Honestly despite his son being financially successful I would be ashamed as a parent.

Honestly never liked him much until I am legend. I really can't stand him as a comedian or a rapper.

These.

I think rumors of him and his son supporting Scientology really hit him hard as well and were a big reason people didn't want to watch After Earth.
Shure other actors(Cruise, Travolta etc.) are real scientology members, but Smithes fame was also always partly due to him being a likeable dude. People still saw the fresh prince and were happy to support him. He always seemed like a guy many people would have wanted to hang out with.
Now trying to be politically woke while being connected to some *******s, who worship a mediocre SciFi writer, he suddenly seemed like an excentric weirdo with mood swings.

I'm a fan of his movies, Fresh Prince TV show and I like a few of his rap songs.

Looking back he has a a lot of good roles and been in a lot of movies that I like such as: Bad Boys 1 and 2, Independence Day, Men in Black franchise, Hitch, I Am Legend, Hancock, Shark Tale, The Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds, Wild Wild West (yeah I liked it kinda lol), Ali, I Robot.

But everything after he did After Earth in 2013 hasn't been that good. (I did like Focus though).
