Sweden was something in its heyday?

The Thirty Years' War was a war fought primarily in Central Europe between 1618 and 1648. One of the most destructive conflicts in human history,[14] it resulted in eight million fatalities not only from military engagements but also from violence, famine, and plague. Casualties were overwhelmingly and disproportionately inhabitants of the Holy Roman Empire, most of the rest being battle deaths from various foreign armies.[10] The deadly clashes ravaged Europe; 20 percent of the total population of Germany died during the conflict and there were losses up to 50 percent in a corridor between Pomerania and the Black Forest.[15] In terms of proportional German casualties and destruction, it was surpassed only by the period January to May 1945; one of its enduring results was 19th-century Pan-Germanism, when it served as an example of the dangers of a divided Germany and became a key justification for the 1871 creation of the German Empire.[16]

The overall reduction of population in the German states was typically 25% to 40%.[84] Some regions were affected much more than others.[85] For example, Württemberg lost three-quarters of its population during the war.[86] In the region of Brandenburg, the losses had amounted to half, while in some areas, an estimated two-thirds of the population died.[87] Overall, the male population of the German states was reduced by almost half.[88] The population of the Czech lands declined by a third due to war, disease, famine, and the expulsion of Protestant population.[89][90] Much of the destruction of civilian lives and property was caused by the cruelty and greed of mercenary soldiers.[91] Villages were especially easy prey to the marauding armies. Those that survived, like the small village of Drais near Mainz, would take almost a hundred years to recover. The Swedish armies alone may have destroyed up to 2,000 castles, 18,000 villages, and 1,500 towns in Germany, one-third of all German towns.[92]

Sweden was pretty cool.
But as soon as Prussia began it's rise the decline of Sweden was inevitable.
Prussia almost single handedly defeated Sweden, France, Austria and Russia in the 7 Years War.
Sure Prussia was allied to England but the English didn't deploy heavily to mainland Europe.
They were more concerned with fighting the French in North America.
Prussia > Sweden.

Also, what people usually refer to as "Vikings" were very over-rated.
Kinda easy to waltz into monasteries and butcher un-armed priests.
And people look up to this?

There were viking empires in the middle east and Northern Africa. Vikings had an enormous impact on modern society. Their reputation as being solely raiders was anti pagan Christian propaganda.

The nazi association with Norse mythology is why it's kind of a taboo topic. IIRC the Northern Scandinavian countries resisted Nazi rule.

Sweden has been conquered since paganism was run out. It's still the same blood in Northern Europe.

Vikings were the founders of many kingdoms and states in Europe. It goes deeper than just killing some monks.

Viking history isn't widely explored or studied because of 1. Chistianity during the middle ages and 2. Nazism clinging to Norse Mythology. They were the great European empire that followed the fall of the Western Roman empire. Viking ships sailed from North America to Central Russia and the Middle East.

Viking expansion in Europe between the eighth and 11th centuries: The yellow colour corresponds to the expansion of the Normans, only partly descending from the Vikings

Viking expeditions (blue line): depicting the immense breadth of their voyages through most of Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, Northern Africa, Asia Minor, the Arctic, and North America. Lower Normandy, depicted as a ″Viking territory in 911″, was not part of the lands granted by the king of the Franks to Rollo in 911, but Upper Normandy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normans

The Normans (Norman: Normaunds; French: Normands) were an ethnic group that arose in Normandy, a northern region of France, from contact between indigenous Franks, Gallo-Romans, and Norse Viking settlers.[1] The settlements followed a series of raids on the French coast from Denmark, Norway, and Iceland, and they gained political legitimacy when the Viking leader Rollo agreed to swear fealty to King Charles III of West Francia.[2] The distinct cultural and ethnic identity of the Normans emerged initially in the first half of the 10th century, and it continued to evolve over the succeeding centuries.[3]

The Varangians, originally Swedish, moved into the Service of the Rus and in turn were gifted to Basil II of Byzantium (and used mostly as personal bodyguards).
Are you referring to the battles in which the Varangians were utilised?
You can't be, since they were in service of the Byzantine Empire, not some Viking Empire.

Yes the people that occupied Scandinavia had a big influence on a lot of Europe.
Eg. There were Viking settlements in Ireland. Kievan Rus was ruled by Vikings.
The Rus crushed the Khazars.
Never heard of them colonising the middle east though. If they did it is safe to say it was a pure disaster.

Also, lol at the alternative truth people saying the Christians are the reason for what they perceive as suppression of Viking accomplishments.
Vikings did not record history.
They have themselves to blame for that.

The Rus WERE Viking. I'm not arguing Sweden in particular as a country now. Erik the Red and Lief Erikkson were Norwegian and arguably the most well know Viking explorers.

You're trying to argue Sweden as the only viking country. Which it isn't, and never was. Sweden is part of Scandinavia

I am no professional on the specific period but you may need to read some more.
The Rus were believed to be mostly Scandinavian descended as far as their rulers are concerned.
The general population (second class citizens) was believed to be majority Slavs.
I believe this has some relation to the orignin of the word slav ie. slaves.

K. So a group of Vikings sailed across the world and conquered huge swaths of territory then ruled the people that lived there. Not everyone who lived in the Roman Empire were Roman.

Just fukking lol. Go Google it then. Wikipedia has been a more valid and reputable source for a few years. Inb4 someone finds an example of something ridiculous on wiki. Wikipedia was the easiest most condensed way to show you that you were wrong but if you want further proof an easy Google search will show that you were misinformed and you trying to discredit my source to discredit my argument without making one of your own just furthers cements that you're wrong.

How'd these european countries/cities population recover? I was also reading about the hundreds years war along with the black death and some countries/cities lost like 20-50% of their population. Did they recover by people from different countries settling in and changed the layout/history of that depleted country/city? These things are mind boggling, losing half your country's population, makes me wonder how different history would've been if these things didn't play out.

"Bubonic plague and warfare reduced population numbers throughout Europe during this period. France lost half its population during the Hundred Years' War.[68] Normandy lost three-quarters of its population, and Paris two-thirds.[86] The population of England was reduced by 20 to 33 percent due to plague in the same period.[87]"

"The trend of recent research is pointing to a figure more like 45–50% of the European population dying during a four-year period. There is a fair amount of geographic variation. In Mediterranean Europe, areas such as Italy, the south of France and Spain, where plague ran for about four years consecutively, it was probably closer to 75–80% of the population. In Germany and England ... it was probably closer to 20%.[59]"

"Detailed study of the mortality data available points to two conspicuous features in relation to the mortality caused by the Black Death: namely the extreme level of mortality caused by the Black Death, and the remarkable similarity or consistency of the level of mortality, from Spain in southern Europe to England in north-western Europe. The data is sufficiently widespread and numerous to make it likely that the Black Death swept away around 60 per cent of Europe's population. It is generally assumed that the size of Europe's population at the time was around 80 million. This implies that around 50 million people died in the Black Death.[60]"

"The most widely accepted estimate for the Middle East, including Iraq, Iran and Syria, during this time, is for a death rate of about a third.[61] The Black Death killed about 40% of Egypt's population.[62] Half of Paris's population of 100,000 people died. In Italy, the population of Florence was reduced from 110,000–120,000 inhabitants in 1338 down to 50,000 in 1351. At least 60% of the population of Hamburg and Bremen perished,[63] and a similar percentage of Londoners may have died from the disease as well.[48] In London approximately 62,000 people died between 1346 and 1353.[12] While contemporary reports account of mass burial pits being created in response to the large numbers of dead, recent scientific investigations of a burial pit in Central London found well-preserved individuals to be buried in isolated, evenly spaced graves, suggesting at least some pre-planning and Christian burials at this time.[64] Before 1350, there were about 170,000 settlements in Germany, and this was reduced by nearly 40,000 by 1450.[65] In 1348, the plague spread so rapidly that before any physicians or government authorities had time to reflect upon its origins, about a third of the European population had already perished. In crowded cities, it was not uncommon for as much as 50% of the population to die.[39] The disease bypassed some areas, and the most isolated areas were less vulnerable to contagion. Monks, nuns and priests were especially hard-hit since they cared for victims of the Black Death.[66]"

Highly doubtful.
What's more likely is there are remnants of the Europeans (the women) who were taken into slavery (and there were a lot. Some estimates say a million or more. I am no expert so wont give an estimate of my own).

This 100%

Most accounts of Vikings from the time show rapid expansion and domination across Europe. Additionally, the Anglo-Saxon chronicles itself put forth the image of an unstoppable army, as well as unbeatable heathen warriors. At one point it states (paraphrasing) that the entire armies of England were put against them but still could not stop (the Vikings) from going anywhere they pleased and killing everyone they came across.

It wasn't slavery. Scandinavians worked as mercenaries and temporarily ruled one of the kingdoms of Northern Africa. I'm trying to find their name now. They still have red hair and fair skin.

Also the whole "white slavery" thing really only started to become a topic when an extremely liberal shift happened in the west. Your numbers are inflated and come from an uncredited book written by a liberal college professior with no backing 15 years ago. Your arguments are bullsh!t and it's really easy to see youre wrong by just plugging it into Google.

What are your thoughts on them helping free your people(Sicily) from the Moors? ^No bias

I appreciate the Normans kicking the Moors out of Sicily, the Moors weren’t there for long, the Normans overthrew and expelled them in 1061.

EDIT: The white slaves in North Africa were actually Spanish from the peninsula and captured by the barbars long after the Vikings were gone. and FAR from Scandinavia and the Anglo Saxons
You are talking about the Berbers, many of them were fair skinned and some had red hair. You can still find ethnic Berbers in North Africa, particularly in the Maghreb. Nowadays much of North Africa has been Arabized. The Moors were made up of 90% ethnic Berbers and about 10% Arab Middle Easterners at the time they invaded Spain, Portugal, Southern Italy, and Sicily. The Berbers were genetically similar to Mediterranean Europeans.
