Is "depression" code for lazy and immature?

I've lived with depressed people and that seems to be the underlying theme.

I know, I know the rigmarole of being an adult should come with a cheering section.

But it doesn't, now grow the **** up and do something with yourself already.

In before Timmys condone adults acting like children.

What exactly are you doing that makes you mature and not lazy? Like keeping things clean, going to the gym, home improvement?

Making cringe threads in the sports misc, calling everyone a Timmy, and telling everybody he's blocked them.

Very sad.

nah, it is a chemical imbalance. here's the thing though.. its temporary. so, to me you are partly correct

however, ive had a few events that led to depression that stem off of a very happy time in my life. and i noticed that the depression seemed to influence thoughts.

therefore, its a physical state and influences thought there. but you're correct in that its correctable. and that's through habits, exposure, etc.

I've known plenty of people with solid careers who are/have been depressed as hell.

Myself... I've had some of the worst depression in the last couple years. That was after hiking from Georgia to Maine and then following it up with a bike from Canada to Mexico (if i fall in the bucket of lazy ... then 99% of the world is lazy). Had a solid 50K-100K/year job most of my life. I was never diagnosed with depression and I've never talked to psychologist ... but i'd describe my sense of being most of the last few years as an ungodly strong nihilistic feeling almost every day. It's only significantly gotten better after realizing i was living an inauthentic life... and course correcting.

IMO... depression is the life/spirit equivalent of a phsyical wound (pain+blood). Except instead of signalling that you're physically harmed it signals that the life your currently leading is not congruent with your real self.

I don't care.

Depression isn't an excuse for not taking care of your responsibilities.

That's called being an adult.

Do you think I like working 40 hours a week and wouldn't rather **** off all week long?

Do I wanna clean my place?

Do I wanna spend money and time fixing my car?

I do all that **** because I realize that being an adult means doing things you don't always want to do.

Basically everyone I've met IRL with "severe depression" fall into the same category:

Lived their lives like children/teens, coasted on the wave of youth, now jilted because no adults want anything to do with them.

Because while everyone else was busy learning how to be responsible, edified adults, the "depressed" people were like "weeeeee!!!!" poisoning their brains with drugs.

Hey, dude with bipolar depression checking in. I still work 40 hours a week, I still take care of my responsibility. Having depression doesn’t make you not an adult. While some may milk it, not everyone does.

Been there and done that son.

I got over it by stopping acting like a bitch and getting out the house and getting to work.
