Ask A Professional Poker Player Anything

AMA

FAQ
Hourly?
$30-40 USD

What game do you play?
HU PKO Zoom. HU=1 on 1, PKO=you get money when you knock someone out and only when you knock them out, zoom=you get a new hand when you fold as opposed to staying at a table watching the action

How many hours a week you work?
20-30, but that's cuz I'm lazy

How much money can you make?
If I worked my ass off, I could probably get close to 6 figs, really good players are generally in the 150k+ range, probably .01% of the population though. I don't though cuz I live in Eastern Europe, I already have everything I want/need and I have other hobbies that are far more important like reading, writing and miscing

Can I make money doing it?
Sure, 1/2 at your local casinos is filled with boomers who believe in Q and would happily send their only child to die in Iraq for freedom, basically knowing the rules, not being insane and having a bit of range understanding (what to raise, what to bet, when to bet and position) and you can probably make $10-15 an hour, not anything special, but if you're there for a laugh, it's better than losing at a casino

How should I start?
Learn the rules, watch Raise Your Edge on youtube and then get RYE's course of your game of choice

Would you recommend it as a career?
No, not unless you wanna move to south east asia or eastern europe or central europe, it's hard if you're a Scandy or in the anglosphere due to the high cost of living. Kahnman calculates you need about 70k to be happy there, cost of living where I listed is about 1/3, so you need to make 25k to live pretty damn good. As a side hustle, I'd recommend it IF you want to invest in courses, if you want to do it "for free, (no such thing)" you are beyond help and I'd tell you to stay away cuz you'll be losing money

Do you like it?
It's better than 99.9% of jobs, it gets boring, I mostly hit singing scales when I play due to basically solving all aspects of the game, but I am aware at how good it is all things considered; ez money, stressless, can take off 3 months at a time, no boss, work from wherever, can get ahead ez (study more), not physically taxing at all, ends when it ends (don't take home anything or how some jobs are 8 hours, but really 8.5-9 all things considered), here's a vid I made a while back on the subject matter:

There's no "basic strategy" hu, it's a very nuanced game that requires you to be very aware of exactly what portion of the game tree you're in.

The best analogy I have is that I am the GSP of my game, there are absolutely no flaws to my game,I do everything amazingly well and have many ways to beat you.

My CB isn't too high or too low (55% v 65%+ of population)
My aggression can be very high in the right spots and I'm never scared to go 3 streets when my range calls for it
If I feel you're going crazy (betting too much), IDGAF and will call you down just to let you know I will
I check back strong hands like my weakest top pairs, so don't think you'll just probe vs my check back (when I don't bet flops or the 3 cards that come) and print money doing it

Beyond that, I have literally thought about all aspects of the game tree (what can happen), it is to the point that I am thinking about the following questions:

What sizing do I use for my trips, 1/3 3 streets, 1/2 2 streets+2/3 on the river and, 1/3 1 street, 2/3-3/4 turn and pot on the river and how do I balance all those 3 lines with my bluffs with each ones...compare that to most people:

0 idea about size, 0 idea about bluffs, 0 idea about balance and paired boards (trips) are very easy to solve, so if they're not solving these boards....you can imagine their stupidity on other ones.

Post your lifetime graph.

What’s your biggest downswing?

I played online around 2006/07 when it was just ridiculously easy. Made 5 figures but havent played since Black Friday.

How tough are games online these days?

1k, but I generally don't really downswing for extended periods, winning at 20+bb/100 means although DS happen, they seldom hurt.

Never played before, but everyone says it's harder now, but there are still mega crushers, my game is ez af (chose it as such). Out of 20k players, there is 1 guy that I would say is good and serious, 3-5 that are good relative to the population but still make big mistakes and then the other winning regs are just less trash than everyone else.

I've spoken to all of the top regs, none of them take it seriously, basically none of them have even taken a course..... I've taken 5+, best of best, Upswing, Raise Your Edge, Run It Up, 300 Euro hourly coaching etc.

If you play online instead of in person, why can't you just use a poker program? IDK if poker programs exist but I feel like they should be able to and beat any human player over the long run by calculating ideal probability.

You can, it's called piosolvr, problem is it takes 30+ seconds for an action (average action for most players is 3-5 seconds).

So if you want to do the most obvious cheating in the world that is basically going to have you banned within the hour, you can.

It happens mostly on unregulated websites that can do w.e they want:

Stars, Party, 888 and others are pretty good about it.

Ah I miss poker. Paid my way through college and was a Supernova on Stars back in the day. The bonuses alone were worth it and all I had to do was break even (I didn't I was still a consistent winner paying 12-16 tables). Players used to be so bad then it just dried up. Shame,

Poker sites are probably the only industry that literally leaves billions of dollars on the table every year because those morons are too lazy to pool 50+ million into lobbying efforts like all non retards would do.

In the US with the legalization of sports betting becoming more common now would be the perfect time to get the player base back.

Do you think at a certain point you stop "getting better" at poker? Once you're experienced enough and know all the odds and when to fold//raise/bluff, doesn't it just come down to luck in the end?

Gaming tends to be KBAI based which doesn't really have enough funding to make it worth it IMO. Most efforts are toward the DL end of AI. Top devs can get paid 500k+ a year to work for a trading firm or FAANG. Building a poker AI probably isn't really worth it.

Honestly, it's like anything, esp at my level of play:

Will I stop making massive gains? Yes I crush the game, same thing with any activity; physique, chess, painting, driving etc, you just taper off

Do you stop making gains all together? Nope, I unlock very very small things (bet sizing w trips on the river, open folding, open shoving 50+bb v regs) all the time.

Does it make some big diff? Nope, but it makes a small one

Whats the best way to study PIO? Do you do mass database analysis/pool exploits? What are the most exploitable spots/biggest mistakes players are making?
