Ok seriously what the fuk happens if there's no vaccine?

Most businesses can get away with social distancing, will be a pain in the ass but it can be done

but what about large mass gatherings like football matches, it would only take 10 or so people to infect thousands, there's just no way around it

and planes? can't see away around stopping the spread

surely it will have to come to a point where it's 'fuk it whoever gets it gets it'

which will mean this killing of the economy would have been preventable

Maybe herd immunity which would result in a lot of deaths.

We killed the economy for literally no reason. All it did was delay in inevitable. Now we are all going to suffer a 10 year long Great Depression all to save some bingocels.

Lmao vaccinecels

Life will go on. If you had never heard of the coronavirus your life would have not even changed 1%. Sure the virus is probably real and killing people. But the death rate is an absolute hoax.

IMO, everyone has been or will be exposed to this virus. Once it made its way across the ocean (i.e. NYC) undetected at the time, the chance to isolate it was pretty much gone.

The shutdown and distancing is just trying to spread this out so that the healthcare system doesn't get phucked all at once. Plus, the reality is that people would've panicked in masse if the government said "phuck it, everyone's getting sick".

With or without quarantine this virus was going to phuck the economy up.

The shutdowns will go down as the biggest blunder in American history. We literally destroyed our future over something marginally worse than the flu. They didn’t even try some basic restrictions like wearing masks and restricting mass events; just straight to stopping everything.

If they try to pull this **** past May then it’s 100% just a power grab by the gov.

This is what pisses me of the most. The most sensible solutions weren't even executed

There was so much pressure from the left to remain PC about it all that the basics were skipped.

I dont trust the US numbers more than I trust China. Both are reporting number that dont make sense. Agendas are being pushed and ppl chose to remain blind as long as these poverty checks gets handed out.

Vaccine isn't impossible but is pretty unlikely.

Just lmaowtf @ vaccinecels who include that as a variable in their preferred virus strategy.

Point is that some proportion of the population get it and 0.2% of those die.

The different lockdown strategies are just about what timeframe that happens over. Longer timeframe means more hospital resources for people who get seriously sick, shorter timeframe means less destruction of economy, jobs, social fabric.

Well according to the WHO we aren't producing enough antibodies to fight off a second infection. But a scenario in which we don't stop the spread of the virus would result in poor country's populations dwindling. I think that would be good for world GDP, lots of land and resources that could be used by people that know what to do with it.

There will be a vaccine.
It's not that hard to develope a vaccine for most coronaviruses and this coronavirus seems to have a pretty stable genome, there aren't much mutations between the viruses circulating around the world. So there's good hope that a vaccine will be broadly effective. Flu is way more instable and harder to vaccinate against because it has a segmented genome and can undergo genetic reassortment. Coronaviruses just have a fairly long single strand RNA genome and if there aren't a lot of mutations in the spike gene, then antigenic diversity will be quite low too.

Maybe in third world island countries like Australia, but China specifically engineered this thing to take out successful white first world nations like the United States... the death rate is higher here for that reason.

The coronavirus genome being in one piece rather than segmented wouldn't really impact the development of a vaccine. I'm assuming the idea is to engineer a "weaker" mutant virus with the spike protein and use that as the inoculum source. Just from a technical standpoint trying to modify a ~30kb RNA genome seems like quite the technical challenge compared to the influenza genome which is about half that size and broken up in segments. If anything the flu virus genome being segmented into smaller pieces makes it easier to work with in the lab.

Just a quick search of the existing scientific literature indicates that vaccines have been developed in variety of domestic animal systems against other coronaviruses. Anyways there's an interesting perspective article regarding coronavirus vaccine development that I've linked to below.

https://emj.emg-health.com/wp-conten...s-Vaccines.pdf

An interesting question arises in developing a vaccine in terms of whether we reach herd immunity before a vaccine is ready for widespread use. Vaccine development is an expensive process and I wouldn't be surprised if pharma companies are a bit leery about investing significant resources towards a vaccine that might be irrelevant.

Obviously.

That's why when panicels claim that a vaccine is impossible they're hurting their own agenda. If a vaccine and immunity is impossible it means there's no point continuing the lock down, we'll just have to open up and accept that corona is part of life now. So yes, unfortunately 0.2% more old people will die every year, absolute tragedy.

OP, it's easy
just go to a clinic, get some aborted fetuses , collect the tissue, have a rabbi give a blessing,, put some egg yoke in it, break ur thermometer to acquire some mercury, and inject it in yourself

this will surely save u from the coronavirus.

It is more tricky to develope vaccines against influenza because of the genetic reassortment that occurs with the segmented genomes of influenza viruses.

Yes, there are many ways to generate vaccines. As you said taking a "weaker" mutant virus is one way. This is called "attenuation" in the lab. It is not that hard even with a 30 kb RNA genome. Traditionally this was done by passaging the virus in embryonated chicken eggs but now in modern times you take a rational look at the genome (e.g. what accessory genes of the virus help it to hide/shut off immune respones of the host) then set up a reverse genetic system and knock out those genes to get an attenuated virus that is easier for the immune system to fight and thus be used as an vaccine.
Those are the best and most efficient vaccines since the virus is still viable but this takes time plus the time to test the candidates in clinical studies.
The problem with influenza is that those types can go back to the hot virus because of the recombination that can occur with the segmented genome (reversion to virulence).

The other way would be to produce a killed vaccine. Here you just propage the virus in cell culture or embryonated eggs and then inactive/kill it with heat or chemicals. That's what is done with the flue shot. Problem here is that immunity is not as good as administering a "live" attenuated virus. So you have to add chemicals that boost the immune system (adjuvants).

Other ways are to put the genes for the proteins that induce an immune response (e.g. the spike) into a viral vector like adenovirus. Those are called subunit-vaccines. The problem here is that now you just have one or a few proteins expressed and it's not clear how good the immunity will be.

Same with the RNA-platform vaccines. Here you inject a RNA that codes for the respective proteins like the spike. Still pretty new technology with unclear outcome.

I think the best approach is to generate a killed vaccine for short term and a live attenuated one for long term immunisation.

Developing a vaccine should be simple.

Took no time at all to develop one for the common cold and HIV.
