Gf Wanna Restore Her Dad's Broken Volkswagen Beetle

Her dad died a few years back and I guess she just wants to restore it cuz it was her dad's first car back in the 70s. Just rotting in their garage now for a decade +.

That means we will be driving a Beetle around the city now and then if she gets it restored(I already have a Ford Ranger and Toyota Fortuner). Anyone have an idea how good/bad a Beetle is? Will the ugly people in the philippines laugh and point at us? I hardly see these things these days.

People in America love those old VW beetles being restored. Just having a running car will probably gain you some status in the Philippines lol

Never even drove one. So I hope it is good. Shop quoted $1100 for restoration.

Ford was 2014. Fortuner last year.

Contractor to Pepsi. Got fleet of trucks that we deliver throughout the city. Also do programming.

Well, we got it earlier today and drove with it for the whole day/most of the night. So tight but great.

The biggest issue is the engine. Make sure she keeps on top of maintenance and it should be good.

Yeah. That is also what the mechanic told us at the shop earlier. Plus bi monthly checkup to be safe.

Only 1100? What's wrong with it?

Pluses. They never die, extremely simple air cooled engine can be changed in a few hours (20mins world record time)

They look cool as hell.


Downsides.

Slow, hp ranged from 30s to maybe 60hp tops
Extremely unsafe in accidents
Not comfortable, most electrical options wont work... if they do, they're lousy by today's standards.

I love em, but only on weekends

Engine and some wiring. Rusts on some parts. Plus where I am, prices here are cheaper than in US.

And yes, when she was driving fast, I felt so unsafe. I was holding for dear life.

The lightweight of them makes rust a problem... that's def something to keep an eye on, floors rusting etc.

I imagine it's not a huge problem in phillipines due to the warm weather.

Do you live there fulltime? My gf grew up there but came to Canada during childhood

Might be moving to the Philippines.

The easiest thing to fix on those is the engine. It’s basically a lawn mower with more than 1 spark plug. Parts (in the US) are extremely cheap.

You already drive a ranger so u shouldn't get many more looks then you already do. At least the beetle is a classic.

Those are great car for working on. You can rebuilt the engine with a butter knife.

Well I go to Brasil almost every year but yeah cuz parents are here and they are old. Plus got a business.

I remember my American friend was shocked that massages here are like $6-10. She said in US they are like $60. And vet prices here are very cheap too according to her.

I dig it. Looks really nice. Tell her to never get rid of it. I would definitely drive one of those older ones but wouldn't be caught in the new era ones. Vintage is cool. 2 years ago I got a sentimental piece from dead great-grandfather. 1953 International pickup. Will keep forever.
