*69k reps* GTFIH for 1990s feels. Feeling nostalgic this morning. Wrote a short story

I get in this mood once in a while where I get really nostalgic for my childhood - which took place exclusively in the 1990s.

I think it all started with me posting about video stores in another thread this morning, so I wrote up this small story of what the 90s looked like for me. Mind you, I wrote this in 10 minutes while keeping an eye on my pupper so it's not the best written, but I tried to capture those 90s feels.

It's long, but if you were a child of the 90s it would be interesting to see if any of this resonates with you.

The year is 1997. The month is July. The long hazy, lazy days of summer are officially in full swing. It seems like an eternity ago that you were sitting in that classroom in mid-June, gazing longingly out that window at the summer landscapes beyond, and dreaming of your impending summer vacation.

You wake up on the later side of the morning. No more need for mom to wake you up, no need for alarm clocks now. As you slowly open your eyes, still heavy with sleep, you can hear the sound of birds chirping outside your window, as rays of sunlight gently filter through the cracks in your blinds. Outside your closed bedroom door, you hear the distance rumbling of the old air conditioner in your parents’ bedroom window. If it’s on this early, that definitely means she’ll be a hot one out today.

You stumble to the kitchen still wearing your PJ’s from your favorite cartoon, which happens to be Rugrats at this point in time. The TV is on in the den and your mom is standing in the kitchen. She smiles at you and says good morning. She tells you she’s making your favorite breakfast and to go watch TV until it’s ready. You grab the glass of milk your mom offers you and sit in front of the TV in your favorite sofa chair. You flip the channels until something catches your eye. Great, re-runs of Power Rangers. You haven’t seen that show “in years.” You were such a little kid when that show premiered. It might be fun to revel in the nostalgia a bit.

Later in the morning you venture out on the back porch with your swim trunks and towel. Time to hit the pool for a bit. You feel the refreshing coolness of the water as you cannonball in it without even testing its temperature. You’re young and fearless, you don’t need to check. The world is simple, you’re innocent, nothing bad will ever happen. No consequences. Your mom calls you in for lunch. Looks like she’s made hotdogs on the BBQ again – definitely one of your favorite summer lunches.

In the early afternoon, you throw on your shorts and a T-shirt. You tell your mom you’re going to bike over to the video store to rent some games. She approaches you with the sunscreen. You groan but you let her apply it to your cheeks and nose. She hands you the bottle and tells you to not forget your arms, legs, and neck. The sun is really hot out today. You do as she says.

You throw on your baseball cap and grab your bike from the shed. As you bike down your quiet suburban street, you see a couple of kids playing in a front yard, a couple loading a car for what looks like a camping trip, a father mowing the lawn. The sounds of summer and smell of freshly cut grass overtake your senses. You feel happiness. You arrive at the video store and you leave your bike on the curb. No need to lock it up, nobody would ever think of stealing it. Plus, you can keep an eye on it from inside the store at all times. You say hi to the clerk and head over to the video game section immediately. Just this year your parents finally caved and got you an N64 for Christmas. You don’t own many games, but you have just as much fun renting them. You notice that the deal of ‘3 games, 3 days, 3 dollars” is still on. You stand in the air-conditioned store, the smell of stale popcorn and the newest release blaring in the background TV overcoming your senses once again. You finally make a decision and bring the 3 games you selected to the counter. The lanky teenager looks at one of them, rated M for Mature. 17+. He looks you up and down, cracks a small smile, and asks if your parents are ok with you renting this. You say, "absolutely!" He asks for your 3 bucks. You add a bag of candy to your order and pay.

You’re biking home now, the plastic bag containing your prized new possessions dangling from the handlebars of your bike. You’re already thinking of how great it will be to shut the blinds in your living room and play these new exciting games in the comfort of your cool air-conditioned house all afternoon. Even better, your mom told you that she’s making your favorite dinner as soon as your dad comes home from work later. This seems like it’ll be another perfect summer day. You wonder what tomorrow will hold.

I definitely remember this. At some point, Pokemon cards got banned. I think some older kids were screwing younger kids out of rare cards so parents complained and it got banned outright. So, we'd have to make shady deals in the corner of the schoolyard, hiding cards in our coat pockets. Just lol. Sneaky little fukers we were.

I didn't write about Pokemon in my story since the card game became really prevalent more around '99. Definitely one of my best memories from childhood, though.

I still own my entire Pokemon card binder. 100% srs.

All my 90s brahs must still be asleep this morning. I also get that you might not want to read that, which is very fair.

Anyone remember these feels - get home from school, open TV, pop your game in and then you hear....

The amount of times that sound of hooves and wonderful peaceful music brought the feels. Spent an entire summer running through this incredible game.

Great time to be alive. I'm really glad I grew up in the pre-tech era. When I was in elementary school, the internet was in its absolute infancy. We used to go to the computer lab and boot up Windows 95 and pretty much just use MS Paint for fun.

I remember that and playing this awesome game around Halloween:

I used to go to my older cousin's house all the time just so I could play OOT.

Hit me in the nostalgia feels hearing that.

I was still playing the SNES as much as my N64 in 1996-1997. Super Mario RPG and DKC3 had just come out. But yes, PS1 was also a great console. I remember getting much more into the PS2 instead of the Gamecube when both were released.

I'd still pick the N64 over the PS1 any day, though. Truly the golden era of gaming (SNES - N64).

Started a new game in Chrono Trigger the other day.

I took a bit of liberties writing this, just trying to make it sound as idyllic as I could. Glad you were able to pick up on that nostalgia despite the experience differing from your own. Dunno why I'm so nostalgic this morning. It may be the time of year that just reminds me of those long summer vacations from the 90s. Not a care in the world. Work is really stressful at the moment, lots of transitions.

PS1 library was just immense, even till this day I discover great new games from the PS1 era.

N64 had a couple of good games but that was it and couldn't compare, in the end it was a big failure for nintendo.

Chit brah, now you got me going with the nostalgia. My childhood took place between the late 90's and early 2000's, which probably accounts for some of the difference.

July, 2005.

It's hot out, but you're making the seven mile walk into town. Before you head out, you grab a PS2 controller and a couple of games you've been dying to play multiplayer. Your friends always meet at Tony's Pizza, and today is no different. Normally, you'd take your bike, but your older brothers just burnt you a CD with a bunch of songs that you want to check out. You take the scenic route through the historic section of Town, and spend some time thinking about how your town has a bit of a reputation for being haunted. Funny enough, you think to yourself "For a place that's supposed to be so haunted, nothing ever really happens around here." The name 'Sleepy Hollow' is more aptly named than anything else; a tired suburbia just outside of Tarrytown.

You get to Tony's, and your friends are all there. You should have cherished this place a little more, because it closes down in a few years time. You order a two slices, a coke (you used to drinkregular sodainstead of diet back then), and a beef patty, then grab a seat with your friends. You're already having a good time. You're all right here, in the moment. One of you cracks a joke about something immature, and the rest of you burst into a fit of uncontrollable laughter. Some adults shoot you guys a look, but you could care less.

Once the food is done, you guys get up and head to Eric's place. He's got two controllers, and his parents are cool about letting you guys hang out in the basement. He's got a good collection of video games, too. You guys get there, and you're all fukking around. Somebody asks you to prank call the one of the pizza places nearby--the go-to prank call was to call two pizzerias that were across the street from each other and pretend to be confused as to which one you were calling... Then do the same thing to the other one. It's a riot, and you're all cracking up as you get cursed out by the pizza place before they hang up on you. Next call is to the local chinese food place; you ask them if they sell two seater mountain bikes... Cue the hang up. But you call back, because you aren't letting go that easy. This time you place an order, and a big one. Then you tack on the mountain bike at the end, cue the cursing. They hang up.

You guys boot up the PS2 at some point, and rotate between 1 on 1's, and bullchitting about urban legends. "Something, something, Marilyn Manson removed a rib to suck his dink" stuff like that, and other things you'd later learn were just not true.

Somehow, the day is gone before you even know it. The time just disappeared. You swear it was 3PM when you got to Eric's, but now it's 9PM. The sun is down, and it's pretty much about to be time to go home. You pack up your stuff, and make your way out the door at 10PM. You'll all hang out again tomorrow, so there's that.

The walk home is long. You flip through your booklet of CD's and grab your favorite Modest Mouse album, Good News for People Who Love Bad News, flip to song 3, Float On. The cool night air is comfortable. You think about what life will be like in a couple of years, and assume it'll be pretty similar...

What you don't know is that next year, you will move. You will slowly talk to these friends less, and see them even less. You'll grow up a little too soon, and you'll grow away from your roots. But you'll always be fond of them.

Feels brah. Thanks for typing that out. Much like my own experience, you've captured that carefree spirit of youth. Not a care in the world. Multiplayer with friends was awesome. I remember carrying my PS1 with a bunch of games in my backpack and biking over to my friend's place in 2000-2001 or so to play THPS. Then we'd go to the local park and just wipe out on our own skateboards cuz we sucked bad.

That carefree spirit is a beautiful thing, man. Your only worries are whether or not you're going to keep having fun. I really do miss how the social aspect of games has been wrecked by online multiplayer. There was something really nice about getting everyone together in one spot.

Having a bike as a kid was basically the equivalent of having a car as an adult, too. It was like a set of wings.

Adventure was around every corner--even if it was a corner you'd already explored. There was always the possibility that the day could turn out extraordinary. As you get older, though, you begin to realize that rounding the corner is less and less adventurous and more and more familiar territory. This is both beautiful, and sad.

Your search for "something new" broadens, and your idea of adventure changes a little bit. Your values change. Things become less important, and others become more important.

Life tilts on it's head. Not because of some radical shift, but because you decided to tilt it. You changed, somehow.

Chit man, I'm leaving NY in 30ish days for Austin.

I'll miss this place when I go. I'll always remember walking home under the cool night sky with my red walkman in hand, fantasizing about all the extraordinary things that could happen one day. I still have that walkman.

So true dude
I remember my buddy in high school complaining about how we all have to head home to play video games together. Chit is lame compared to playing 4 player on n64.
And I rode my bike everywhere. Kinda crazy to think about, I haven’t ridden a bike in years. Once I got my license I was off.

Same. I haven't biked regularly since I was 15 or so. I miss it a lot, biking around my old home town.

Anyone remember these feels - get home from school, open TV, pop your game in and then you hear....

The amount of times that sound of hooves and wonderful peaceful music brought the feels. Spent an entire summer running through this incredible game.
