Did you use tabs or by ear?

The first two songs I learned were "Wherever I May Roam" by Metallica and "God Called In sick Today" by AFI and I learned by ear.

Got good with the open chords then started learning bar chords throughout the neck.

Then experimented with tabs on Sweet Child O' Mine and Tears in Heaven once i got timing down. I have to use tabs. My ears aren't that good.

Funny how in retrospect when you first pick up the G it seems like the hardest thing in the world but after you put the time it it comes as natural as scratching your nose when it comes to what you have learned

I thought the intro to more than feeling at the time was like trying tk pull off albert lee. Now its just picking around a D G.

Like anything else though if you dont use it. You lose it.

Any of you guys ever play through a line 6 guitar port?

For me it was "My Own Summer" by Deftones and "Iron Man" (without solo) by Sabbath, both using tabs and tutorials. Mostly tutorials though lol.

I always hear people talking about not doing the solos.

I always found difficult strum patterns harder. With solos after you get the little nuances down the bends, vibrato and trills etc etc down they are not that bad.

I think rythem guitar players are too under appreciated.

Rythm player here. I can only play solos when I learn them before hand and practice them a lot.

I fukkin wish I could just play lead along to any song like a lot of guitar players, improv style : (

I'm still new. Will be 2 years in Sept. but until recently i just didn't have the dexterity to play fast enough for solos, whereas with simpler songs like those I learned, the rhythm parts are straight forward enough

Edit: ^Brosef how long you been playing? And do you know "leaving song pt ii" by AFI? That was such a good song lol

Going fast is fine but only after you know what you are doing behind it. Accuracy will compensate for speed. With out thatt will just sound like jumbled noise at a fast pace

I have not sit down with one in years but like with sksteboarding or any thing in your life you use to love to do the love remains no matter how much time has past you by.
Just keep playing my friend and enjoy the music. Music should never be a competition its a one on one thing with yourself.

Everyone else can like it or hate it.

damn, that's a long time. Wish I started earlier but enjoying learning as is. As for the album, I'll have to check it out. I only know like 3 AFI songs

Yeah, exactly. It takes a while to build up to the speed with any sort of precision, which is why i think i waited before starting to learn solos. Agree 100% with the bolded. It really is about the journey rather than the destination in this case.

Me too. I'm amazed when I see players just flowing through the solo. It's not technique that bothers me, it's lack of creativity and imagination. But I guess that comes with experience and fukton of playing.

Me it's just not knowing which freaking fret it SHOULD be that I am playing next. Like I said that is why I have to learn the solo before hand.

This makes me a joke of a guitarist, to me..

One by Metallica... Still remember printing out like 15 pages of tabs for that song and only learning the intro riff lol... This was like 2005.. Few years later I was tabbing out full prog metal albums but I ain't about that life no more lol

Well you have to learn some solos before, you are not Hendrix. But for some "freestyling" if you know chord progression then just play around that chord. Also scales (which I have never learned) should give you the idea of what note should come next. Same goes for playing bunch of solos when you start recognizing some patterns that you can apply anywhere.
