18 year old who couldn’t swim entered ocean to save 2 girls then drowned

The sea was very rough. Sounds like they were young kids goofing around but he was out of the water when they lost control.

i'm confused, the story said he pushed them to shore, but couldn't get back himself...

'Jalan Alston saved both me and Sierra's lives from the rip current off the Jersey shore,' Smith wrote. 'He selflessly and almost instinctively jumped into the current after me, pushed me out and got me to shore. He then tried to get back to the shore with Sierra's help, but to no prevail.

I'll never understand why people that don't know how to swim go in the ocean, around rivers, pools, etc. Swimming is extremely simple to learn and do. If you want to go around an aquatic environment, you can literally save a lot of heartache and your life to learn how to swim before hand. Also I know rip currents can be scary. But I just don't understand why people (The females in this case) didn't educate themselves on rip currents prior to walking into deeper water.

I don't know why people go out in the ocean when there are no lifeguards. Especially with rip currents. I tell my son all the time to never go in the ocean when there are no lifeguards on duty.

I was gonna learn how to swim, but Corona hit. Still gonna learn as it's good cardio and will help me lose weight. Just gotta go take swimming lessons somewhere

people don't realize how scary the ocean can be

brb its boring when your feet touch the bottom so you go out 'just a bit further'

brb you tread water for a bit but realize you are getting tired so you start to swim towards shore

brb 20 seconds of hard swimming later and you realize you are moving further away from shore

brb look behind you and see the massive expanse of ocean

I've sailed for years and it is crazy how fast chit can get out of control even on the most idyllic day. The water can easily kill you.
