I had a coworker that retired in Costa Rica. For the last year of her employment she would spend 30 minutes of every day walking back and forth from her parking spot learning Spanish. She got there and was able to negotiate a rental contract, utilities, internet etc. Way cheaper than US. Lived in a Tropical Paradise.

Her Husband is a gifted chemical engineer (I think that's his job title) but he was never comfortable with his Wife translating for him so they moved back to the US. They could live anywhere in the world.

Can't stand it either OP. Studied French and Spanish at school for many years and lived in Paris for 6 months and got to lower intermediate level.

Lived in Japan for 5 years and worked really hard at learning Japanese. I mean I was determined and went out of my way to speak Japanese every day, study Kanji after work, etc. Got to lower intermediate level.

Now spending most of my time in Central Europe and I'll be damned if I'll make even the slightest effort to learn the local language. I'm done with that chit. Clearly I'm missing the foreign language acquisition gene or something.

Worst part is seeing people who just casually pick up languages like its nothing. Sticking to the Queen's from now on.

Having said that, it sucks. I'll take my dogs for walks in the morning and dogs are very cute so almost every time I do, some friendly type will smile and say something to me in their heathen tongue. All I can do is grin like a retard then move on as quickly as possible (nobody speaks English here). I guess my choices are to either try to learn at least a few words or never leave the house. I'll probably go with the latter.

I also freak out when going to supermarkets. I pray to God every time that they will just check me out but pretty much always they end up asking me something and I have no idea what they're talking about.

lol feels. I tried my best to learn a language, was annoying when some people laughed at me because I was slow with learning even though I was trying so hard. I don't know why I find it so hard, my brain can't even think in another language, I have to translate in my head. I just want to reach level B2 and I'm happy. Lower intermediate isn't bad u should feel good

Thanks brah, repped. I'm exactly the same. Have to translate every word in my head before speaking. Moreover no matter how much I would try to immerse myself in the language, I would only ever pick up a small percentage of what was being said. I did conversation exchange in Japan regularly and the only good thing to come out of that was fukking a few of the Japanese sloots (as well as an Iranian girl who had become native level in two years or something - Iranians seem to be particularly good at learning foreign languages).

Thank you for saying that about lower intermediate being ok but let's face it, after 5 years living in a country and working really hard at a language it's pretty pathetic.

I've just come to accept that it's something I can't do and that there's zero correlation between precocious native language acquisition (I was able to read English from a younger than normal age) and being able to pick up a foreign language.

What language were you studying?

I regret every moment I spent studying foreign languages. Have absolutely zero to show for it (by now I think I would struggle to say even the most basic things in French or Japanese) and would have been better off spending that time doing something else or just fapping.

I'm the same with learning musical instruments. Had these fantasies of getting good at the piano or guitar and eventually realized that I just have zero talent. I probably still could have reached an ok level if I had worked hard enough (meaning being able to hammer out some simple melody) but when you're massively untalented at something it just becomes a chore.

Or if you really like learning a language and you see yourself working in a profession that requires you to use the intended language then its not difficult to learn it every day at home with many videos,guides online and practicing it by speaking even if it is with yourself which is what Im doing. And the results wont happen overnight of course.

If you speak English as you're native tongue there is no real need (unless you plan on living somewhere else).

One of those 3 languages you speak is English, I guarantee English is the most useful language you know.

- Study pronunciation first
- Speak straight away with whatever you can say
- listen to simple podcasts and audio while you're doing something else even if you don't really understand it
- use spaced repetition software for vocabulary and pair it with a frequency dictionary
- work through a simple 'grammar basics' book and do the exercises, one new concept a week starting from the very basics
- get a tutor on italki for 1-2x 30 mins per week for clarifying grammar and speaking practice
