*69k reps* revelation about Pokemon cards - how to determine where the holos are
I just posted this in a thread I made about 90s nostalgia. A miscer posted that, if you weigh the Pokemon card packs, you can determine which have a holographic card within as the holos weigh slightly more, resulting a Pokemon card pack that is slightly heavier. I though this was utterly brilliant so I put it to the test.
I still have my Pokemon card binder with a complete set. I also have a bunch of Pokemon card packs I had opened but left the cards inside for fun. So, I took 2 packs and tested this hypothesis. Results are as follows:
Here is a picture of my old Pokemon card binder.

The experiment itself:
Pack with 11 cardsno holo:

Pack with 11 cards and aholographic Nidoqueen:

As you can see, the pack with the holographic card is 1 gram heavier, thus proving this hypothesis to be correct. The pack with the non-holographic rare within was sitting at 18g, then turned into 19g. The pack with the holo card was a static 20g. This really blew my mind this morning. Imagine having this knowledge back in the late 90s. You could have card-mogged your entire gang of friends. You could have made your gullible friends believe you were psychic, like Alakazam.
Thoughts?
Will rep as many of my Pokemon brahs as possible and get the rest off recharge.

It would have been heavily abused back in the day. No way.
Absolutely sickening discovery.

Also, this doesn't work anymore with the current cards as they've removed the ability to actually weigh packs.

I'm a collector myself, mostly old video games, and the market is preposterous now. My hypothesis is that millennials that grew up with these things are now making a decent salary so they can pay for items that can make them relive their youths. Seriously, some of my games are worth thousands.

Imagine bringing a scale into your local card shop and start weighing the packs lmao
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Also lol at buying the booster packs, you could get all the cards you needed from the sets of 60 that were way cheaper and had complete evolution lines and all that.

I also just took a quick look at Ebay and you are all right, the value of these cards has really shot up. Around 10 years ago, they were worth practically nothing. I got a Blastoise at the flea market for 50 cents. Now, it seems like they've all gone up in value. I'm watching a few auctions on Ebay to get a better sense of what their worth it.
You brahs mirin' my doubles game? That's a shadowless Charizard right there. Might be worth a good amount.

Mirin brahs. I had a binder full of pokemon cards stolen right out of my house by some distant extended family. When called out they said they were gonna sell them in a garage sale... Just thinking about it is making me pissed right now 17 years later... FML.
Back on topic, the OP is very true. I had a classmate who was knowledgable of this trick and also another method which involved squeezing/feeling out the center of the pack with your thumbnail/index fingernail. We were broke 6th graders at the time and we never really pursued these methods.
