Been looking at job listings and a lot of them don't post the salary. I wouldn't even bother wasting my time on those unless I was desperate, I just exit the window.

If it was negotiable, they'd list something like $65,000 - $85,000? What's there to negotiate if nothing is on the table?

People who don't work minimum wage jobs often negotiate their salaries/perks.

If it's poverty job, they want to pay the least the can
If it's a job with a highly specific skillset, they are desperate and will pay almost anything

You should have a good idea of what you're worth before applying for jobs. If you don't, there are plenty of resources available. You can also get involved with recruiters, who usually have an idea of the salary ranges and can help you with negotiating the best deal, since they get a commission based on what your starting salary is (paid by the employer).

OP needs the hourly rate to be published on the first line. And if he gets half hour or full hour lunch break.

So you can lowball yourself when they ask you about your current or expected salary.

I look stuff up on Glassdoor. And also have salary discussions with my colleagues that don’t care about the stigma of talking about money. Found out I lowballed myself that way 😂😂.

When you're in the corporate world you don't do hourly anymore. That's for those who punch the clock.

Well I mean if you're making $65,000 now, you apply for a job and have a thorough interview and at the end they only offer $50,000. A big waste of time imo, just post the salary.

So they can go "Well whats your desired salary?" and you go "hmmmm.....55k" and then they can go "Well with your quals we can offer your 50" and you take it and they know damn well that they could have gone up to 70 for the "right candidate"

If you're applying for the position in all honesty you should know what range you're dealing with.


Long story short...I get where you're coming from through. My last interview ended with me suggesting that the company change the Title of the position they were hiring for after I went through 2 phone interviews and 1 in person to find out the starting salary was 45k when the industry average/standard is around 75. Manager and the HR person about lost their marbles when they asked me what I was looking for Salary wise and I said 85. I honestly think that the department manager walked out of there with a different perspective on his life that day.

Also gotta consider current employees who may be watching job postings for comparison


There are generally published salary guides though, at least there are for Canada. I used one for salary negotiations last year

Helps to also be currently employed in the industry you're applying for. That way when a recruiter tells you the number, you can say "I can't, I make more than that at my current job, I'm not willing to do a down grade, I'm sorry." And then they'll tell you "Let me reconvene with HR and I'll give you a counter offer. What number are you hoping for?" Boom slam dunk at that point.

If it's your first job in the industry though... take what you can get, and then use that job's pay as leverage the next time around.
