On this day 15 years ago, Lance Armstrong won his 7th Tour De France. He could have retired as a legend, icon and hero. Instead, his huge ego made him return to the sport again to try and win an 8th Tour De France. He failed some of the drug tests in those years, and he also refused to allow former team mate Floyd Landis on the 2009 time because he doped.

This led to Floyd Landis snitching, and then all the other team mates joined in. With the testimony of these team mates, as well as the blood and urine tests in the most recent TDF races, USADA compiled a 1000 page report and officially banned Lance Armstrong and stripped him.

From hero to disgrace


He lost up to $75 million in lawsuits and potential earnings from 8 dropped sponsors


The news spread like a wildfire, and he confessed to doping on Oprah, and his shame and embarrassment went worldwide

It was probably the way he treated those who accused him of doping and trying to ruin their lives which caused him to get so much heat.

I don't know too much about American sports but didn't Barry Bonds, Tom Brady etc cheat in some way, and are regarded as the GOATS and highly respected?

I think it happened bc he was a huge dick. Literally all of them doped, you couldn’t be competitive without it.

Plus he was the biggest name by far so he became the scapegoat. Heaps of others were caught doping such as Tyler Hamilton and Floyd Landis, but people barely bring them up.

All of this could have been avoided if he did not return to the sport in 2008. He could have lived like a king, being the GOAT cyclist
