There's several factors but mainly nutrients in the blood, a lack thereof makes it easier for your blood alcohol level to rise more quickly

I've casually drank 20 beers in an 8 hour period and was fine; have shotgunned 6 beers in 4 minutes and blacked out(do not recommend)

It's all about how quickly that level rises

For me it is food. If ive eaten within an hour its over for me, no point in even starting to booze. Also if i have a decent buzz - daf if i eat its over, instant buzz killer.
Also if im tired same thing.
