Had anyone here joined natnl guard or military post 30
Im just under age limit and thinking of joining guard to help with disasters and things. That would be pretty cool i think. Not super into going to invade other countries unless its murderous communists but not sure if you can say no to those things. Anyways with the time off im thinking i may have time for basic not sure when id be sent out before my job started back up and i could stick with it on weekends. Im pretty strong but i hate running although i did run three miles with zero preparation a few years back when i applied to be a cop my time wasnt terrible but i was done at the end didnt have to walk though. I have good construction and steel construction and machinery operation skills not sure if theres a use for that. Not sure if some old guy joining is weird as **** and a horrible idea or not.

Pick a training path that will give you civilian experience and contracts when you get out in 2-4 years.

No but I've seen it.
Join a state Aid TF if you want to help in disasters. Otherwise your ass will eventually be sitting a post somewhere in the desert. Srs
If you have a degree look to commission. Pretty good money for a weekend gig if so. 1k a weekend or so.

Theres old guys that join here and there. Not the norm but it happens.
None of your prior experience is really going to matter, you just take a career (asvab) test and based on your scores a recruiter will tell you what jobs are available.
If you want to help out with disasters and the like you pretty much will have to be infantry, or be a truck driver. jobs are decent but not helpful at all for a career except although seems like you know stuff like that already so might be good for you.
medic helps out too but not as much as others
With guard you go about 1 weekend a month, 2 in the summer. Your schedule might increase to 3-5 days a month depending on where your unit is in the deployment cycle (every 5 years).

<--Retired Infantry officer, US Army (I joined at 25)
Knew Plenty OP. They tended to do pretty well because age and experience was on their side. People like to think that there is an age limit to being in good PT shape but I had a first sergeant who was in his late 40s who out sprinted all of us, out distanced us on the ruck marches and distance runs and was just a PT stud.
My advice OP, pick an MOS that will translate into the civilian world. I was infantry and unless you want to start a business (like open a gun range, weapons instructor, police or; if you were a heavy pipe hitter, get into private security) its pretty hard to use your skills after you ETS (all of combat arms are like that really). But PLENTY of guys found a way though. You arent doing anythign unheard of because I went to OCS with a lawyer (no idea why he decided to join. Job security maybe or maybe just a chitty lawyer) who 41. He wasnt able to graduate because he was going to turn 42 before his commission date and you have to get your commission before you turn 42 (was the rule then. not sure about now)
Also, if you do decide to join, read a few ASVAB books and practice so you can score as high as possible.

no but there was guy in my squadron who was in his early 30's. he peed on himself first day when they drug tested everyone and was just overall a weird guy. he failed the drug test and had an entry-level discharge.
there was a guy in his early 30's in a different squadron who was a manlet but very adept, intelligent guy. back then, if you were older than 27 you were immediately disqualified from enlisting active duty so they had to be in the guard or reserves.

Dont do guard or reserve unless you have a job thats cool with you takings days or months off on short notice. Its not really a weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer its more like 3-5 consecutive days a month and a month in the summer. If you want to help with disasters then become a firefighter

'Priciate it master sergeant. Well, i went through OCS with a TON of 1sgts and they all were adamant that they just wanted the officers life (muuuch easier than enlisted i'm told). But i also ran across some who said it would be a pay cut if they went gold. But that could have been their version of "Well, i could bench 4 plates if i really wanted to put int he time to train...."

Thanks for all the info ITT I sent some reps but will post thanks to all as well, I’m going to explore the options, the fema requirement in my state seems high, it has been many years since I was doing ems volunteering but seems that background is favored and they ask for a reference but I do have some skills they ask about and the physical requirements sound good I will send in an application can’t hurt. And yeah maybe volunteering will turn out to be better I can take time off my job without problem but I have to make money for my kid so I was hoping to both do a bit of good and make some extra while doing it, but maybe volunteer is the best way to go. I’m probably going to go to the recruiter office and get exact info from them tomorrow

Think of it as board gold in the community. Recruiter of the quarter and year are board gold for points. Any recruiter coming as an an E4P should leave as a SSG.
And 03E will be a pay raise. 02 same except for the bump in bah. I left the army for bluer waters but have many many years left

Who knows I may warrant over to CID. Our HQ is in the same building.
