Resistance Bands

Finally bit the bullet and ordered a bunch of bands from Amazon along with a resistance band barbell...got 2 sets of bands, 1 set is stackable to 150lb the other is stackable to 100lb, so theoretically if I can manage to stack all 10 bands (lmao) I can get up to 250lb resistance, though I'm not betting on using that many bands at once...

If I take the 6 heaviest bands from the 2 sets I can hit 185lb...theoretically.

Except for the 2 weeks I lifted earlier in July before the gyms all re-closed (CA), I haven't lifted besides dips/pullups since March. With the way things are looking I'm not expecting my gym to reopen anytime soon so said fuk it.

Who uses the bands? Are they even close to effective as free weights?

I don’t train for weight numbers anymore.

I do use bands in the park for curls, tricep extensions, shoulder raises and to provide more/less resistance to calisthenics.

I’m at the stage where I’m happy with my size, so bands are plenty enough for me. For strong legs, I only run and I still have big legs from years of squatting.

Also not encouraging.

Don’t expect to be hitting numbers with bands.

Vary your exercises. It feels different. You can get strong AF functionally though.

I use them when travelling.

They're good for maintaining or just doing something, wouldn't trade my home gym for them though. But if you're in a pinch they're decent enough.

I'm not concerned with specific numbers per se. I am concerned with it being a heavy resistance workout and not just a lightweight aerobics workout.

Obviously I much prefer a real weight room...but inventory is still out after 4 months at all major stores. And I'm not about buying shady 20 year old equipment off CL at a premium. And waiting for the gym to reopen is obviously not working out lol.

I have a feeling you will find them quite tough.

You don’t need to go hard on bands. It’s like going in dry.

Progress ain’t going to happen though. I like them for cutting

They'll at least be great for building stability, assuming you have a good way to anchor them for bench/deadlifts and a bar to attach to.

You won't get the same growth, but it will help you bounce back faster later if you can get some plates.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like they're good for maintaining but not growth...honestly I've probably lost a lot of strength since March so anything I can get is better than nothing.

i used bands for the first ~5 weeks of shutdown before finally snagging some actual CAP weights on ebay. the bands held me over. i still incorporate them to this day.

super useful is a door hangar piece so you can do pulldowns and tricep pushdowns. or link the hangar to the bottom of the door and do rows. worthy investment.

Yeah the set I got came with foot straps, one-handed grips, and door hangars...then I bought a resistance band barbell on the side so I can do more compound type lifts...hoping to get good use out of them over the next several months while local gyms are closed.

I actually do have a 1" CAP dumbbell and barbell set from high school, but limited plates only go up to 65lb so pretty much only good for accessory work, just a few 10s and 5s. Plus only 1 dumbbell and the barbell is a curl bar so not ideal for compounds.

Not necessarily you can get good growth with bands. Especially if you're able to use them while lifting, hooking around the bar, etc.

But even as a standalone, bands can better utilize the law of accommodating resistance which is increasing load throughout a certain range of motion. Something you won't get much of with free weights. Bands can maintain that tension through strong and weak points throughout a lift, essentially exposing the areas you need to work whilst simultaneously working them.

So they're not a full on replacement of free weights, but next to body weight movements, probably the best lifting alternative you can get without free weights. And one of the best accessories to weights.
