What is the Difference Between a Redneck and a Hillbilly?

Anyone know? And which is more offensive? Can I call people hillbillies/redneck?

rednecks are basically anyone who works a trade job, drinks bush in a can, drives a 15 year old pick up but will fight you to the death over which brand of pick up is best. can be from any state.
Hillbilles are just backward folk from the ozark or Appalachian mountains. more likely to brew their own moon shine, play a banjo ext.

Redneck – Country boy, aggressive, lazy tradie who sucks at his job, obnoxious, beer guzzling, gun slinging, racist, rebel flag draped across his truck, territorial.



Hillbilly – Hard working, welcoming, extreme poverty, honest, not racist, witty, but has little education and probably not destined for success, chews.



There is also a third category, Hicks. They are usually similar to hillbillies, but live closer to suburban communities (usually near a river for some reason) and tend to be a bit more aggressive towards outsiders and ignorant.

Hillbillies seem rare, and from a different time now. Seem more inbred. Only from Appalachia.

Rednecks are everywhere. Seen plenty in Southern California. In the South, I don’t think they’re necessarily racist, but mostly would rather be with their own, or black people that are similar to them. Known plenty of rednecks that got a long fine with black people.

Definitely tradies, who like hunting, country music, rebel flags, college football, trucks, and going to Myrtle Beach

I think of rednecks as only from the south or border states. Everywhere else, they're called hicks. Hillbillies are mountain people along the east coast extending up to western PA and maybe even into NY.

Rednecks are the typical people that rent my furnished houses while doing short term gigs at a refinery. This is how I describe them. Welders, pipefitters, boilermakers. Big burly guys with neck tats driving jacked up 4x4s, they smell like diesel fuel and chew tobacco in their sleep. Most people would avoid the Wal Mart aisle if there was one of them in there. I'd punch him in the arm and tell him the hand lotion is near the pharmacy.

Im from kentucky.

I was raised in louisville which is a big city but my mother and father were from easten kentucky in the mountains. My grandfather retired 43 years from rhe coal mines.

My fatger woukd always told me being called a hillbilly is just fine but a redneck is a loud mouth white trash racist pos.

Its funny only people from the city or close the the big city see rednecks or being called one as a cool or good thing.

You can even look up old waylon jenninvs interviews where he woukd say things like the promotor wanted us to play country music to a bunch of rednecks what was he thinking.

Todsys country music pushes that redneck is cool garbage too.

I just always quietly keep ny mouth shut and shake my head in disbelief when i see it.

Rednecks tend to stick their dink only in extended family like cousins, aunts, uncles, etc.

Hillbillies prefer immediate family. Sisters, brothers, mom, grandma, dad, etc.
