Happily married brahs? Any Wedding regrets or pro-tips to share?

“HAPPILY MARRIED”... so bitter divorced brahs need not apply lol

Any regrets about your big day? Not inviting someone, the cost? Location etc? Time/Date?

Personally I don’t regret much.... wish I had chosen a different hairstyle and wish I had taken the offer of a “ceremonial certificate” to look pretty in a frame. Oh well!

(Also wished I had dieted a teeny bit harder beforehand).

And my Po-tip? Do not skimp on a photographer!

Post here so soon-to-be-married miscers may learn from our tips and our mistakes.

Pro tip, find photographers and videographers that are fairly new to the game, they won’t be as expensive and will go above and beyond to make you happy. Also they usually throw in drones and high-quality footage.

If you do an adults only wedding confirm confirm confirm confirm that it will be an adult only wedding. You do not want children showing up and everyone else will be pissed, tell me how I know.

Double check and triple check the DJ, the food and the location so everyone is on the same page.

The most important advice, do not skimp on the alcohol, buy the top tier package at all costs, add custom cocktails for your guest males and females.

True advice true advice, ****ing elope do it in the remote island somewhere and save yourself a **** ton of money.

That is some too tier advice there. We eloped with just the two of us, best decision ever.

I was 100% set on an adult-only wedding but was scared that people wouldn’t listen and would bring their spawn against our wishes. We decided that it was too much of an expense to have other people ruin it. Saved us an absolute fortune!

These guys know what’s up too.

So far the unanimous consensus is.

Don’t spend a fortune
Keep it intimate with less people
Get a decent photographer

I looked at it this way: the happiest moment of our lives, so our closest friends and family are there, why would we spare any expense? We got married almost 7 years ago, and people still talk to me about the food we served...

We did: remote location, small number of guests (60), closest friends/family, who came from around the globe to attend. It was a party that started at around 2pm on Saturday, finished at 9am Sunday, and then I hosted a "recovery party" for my guests that started Sunday lunch until I passed out early Monday morning. I also welcomed our guests on Friday, and organized some cool activities for them, heh.

No regrets at all with our wedding. It was an epic party.

I only wish our honeymoon could have been even longer (it was 5 weeks). Driving around France, "Essen wie Gott in Frankreich"...what a time.

Average cost of a wedding in the UK is apparently £24k.. that is a scary amount but unfortunately I am no CEO 10/k a day. We didn’t put any on finance or CC’s. We saved uo but ours was cheap. Lol

Thta sounds like a really stand-out wedding! And a 5 week honeymoon on top! Wow! You really looked after your guests too.

(Might I enquire how much it cost?)

If we had more money... I would have spent more tbh. But our modest elopement was still at the top of our budget. Lol

Hired a celebrant and paid to marry in a park; new dress; reception at a chain restaurant. Total cost ~$1K kangaroo dollars back in late 1990s. If you want to get married, it's nice to have family and friends there but spending the price of a new car or a deposit on a house is moronic unless you rolling in money.

Well, you're probably not the right person to say this to - but we did the "soul mate" version. I got married when I was 33, and took my time and plenty of experience from relationships to make sure I found the right one. If something ever happens to us, I'll never marry again - that's for sure. Never.

Well you did what was right for you! I'm glad you're happily married.

I don't like mentioning numbers; it's more about how much "fun" it was. We had an open bar, but we also hired drivers so that they would take people back to wherever they were staying. They also brought the guests there. So...party, people did.

One of my friends had been downing Jäger from this "Ice cold" machine, but in a coffee cup - nobody noticed until around 0300 a friend came to me and said "Hey have you seen him?" I went "He'll turn up for sure" and my friend went "You remember him...right?"

Drivers went to search - he was passed out on a local person's front lawn. When we approached him to get him he jumped up saying "So! That was a good power nap, let's get back to it" lol...

That's the "tip" I have I guess - make it so your guests feel like they are at a party. Not some "ironed tablecloth" affair where the bride has to plaster a fake smile on for 6 hours for her 400 guests, and the party ends at midnight because the (already expensive) wedding would go over budget with the venue if they stayed late...

Post here so soon-to-be-married miscers may learn from our tips and our mistakes.
Will answer in steps:

1) No regrets whatsoever. I'm happy to have married my wife. I believe we had a good wedding, and made it a party. People have told us how much fun they had at our wedding, and I believe them. Here's where we did it right:
i) there was a lot of food there, so you had no issues. This includes cocktail, dinner, and after hours
ii) alcohol was free on us. We only went $1,000 overbudget. We were happy about this
iii) Our DJ was excellent. He was able to keep the vibe of a club/late night party. He also allowed (by our request) people to request songs, and he meshed it well into the dancing

2) We had over 200 people, split evenly. We both have big families, so I made sure our number didn't start exceeding that. We could have made this 300+, but I told her that each person will cost $100/plate, so it wasn't worth it. I would recommend the smaller the wedding the better, because it does start to add up fast. Not just the food, but the extra bodies requires more incidentals (chairs, napkins, etc.). We didn't lose money on the wedding, but we didn't make much either.

3) Photographer was very expensive, so be prepared. The pictures are good, but we were shocked how much they cost.

Wouldn't do anything different. Only thing I wish was doing our honeymoon later, because we had to pay for the wedding and the honeymoon almost sequentially, which was a lot of money. Would have preferred more separation. (These were 1 month apart).

Way too many people at our wedding. My mother-in-law invited tons of people. Most gave useless gifts not on the registry. I say keep it smaller. 50 people max.

Why would the mother-in-law get to invite anyone on her own?

We had a wedding at a small chapel in Hawaii, just two of us. No family members or friends.

There's no digital video back then so the video tape was no longer watchable.

She was so beautiful and lively in white that morning and I was the only witness of that.

I think the memory that only my wife and I share helped us keep going and still be together after over 30 years of the marriage.

I was very fortunate and my mom paid for my wedding. It was beautiful and the reception was fun AF. The food was awesome, had a DJ from the local clubs and we were on the dance floor all night. Years and years later people were still saying how great it was.

If I ever got married again I'd elope. Just us or just immediate family.

The best center piece is a mirror under a cheap bowl with a beta in it and floating candles.

Relatively low cost and very unique.

(also just divorced after 12 years... lol so can't say I am happily married, but it is still a great choice)

I would recommend investing in pre marriage counseling and make sure you are both equally yoked. If you can wait till after the marriage to share a bed.

Pro tip. Don’t marry her if she’s not happy with just marrying you. If she’s dead set on having some expensive ordeal and huge rock on her finger then it’s prob going to be a very rough go.

Another pro tip. Throughout the marriage communicate. Don’t let things build up inside that will eventually lead to resentment. This also helps her as much as helps you and will keep things mostly level headed.

Pro tip 3. Wait several years before having children. Children bring change and no matter what stage of life your in they will change your relationship. If your marriage isn’t extremely solid it can be a very bad ending because having a child will test your marriage to great lengths.

So how did you guys decide on a guest list for those with a small wedding?

I’m not a wedding person, and every time I think about having to have one one day... it stresses me out. Most of the stress is I don’t want anything bigger than 80-100 (it will be my day, I want to know everyone that is there, and know them well enough to not be annoyed if they get **** faced drunk). But I’m Asian so immediate aunts uncles and their kids alone for just my side is like 100 already.

Did you have to invite some relatives but not all? How did that work out when they found out their sister is invited but they’re not?
They said she's gone too far this time

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My wife and I both have rather small families and friend circles so having too many guests was not a concern. We had approximately 50 people attend between family and close friends.

No regrets whatsoever with how we did it. We got married at a little country church that my great great great grandfather established in the 1850's, then had the reception a few miles down the road on my family's property. Spent less than $10k including rings and dress. Fed everybody competition grade BBQ, supplied beer, tea and sodas, told guests they could bring any liquor they wanted.

Everybody had a blast, and we went into zero debt over a party. If I had to give someone advice it would be that simple. Make it fun and don't start your new lives together in debt over a party.

I had one person I didn't want there, and she proved me right by being rude and disrespectful to the restaurant and bar staff. Benefit was I was able to cut her off from every family event after that.

We saved money by booking a new photographer who was an acquaintance.
Print your own invitations, you can get them at a craft store and they look just as good as professional made for like $40 instead of $1000.
We made a deal with the DJ to play an extra hour for $100 if the restaurant agreed to stay open, I asked the bartender if he would stay an extra hour for just tips and he agreed, then I asked the restaurant manager if he would let us stay if I helped turn over the room (I used to work banquets, I can turn over a 100 seating room in 30 minutes). Manager let us stay for free, I had the DJ announce that bar would stay open ONLY if the tips were coming in. It worked out great.

My wife bought her dress at a discount store for like $800. Her friends did her hair an makeup. We spent the majority of our budget on a honeymoon.

My pro-tip for wedding day is EAT. The one mistake every couple makes is they get so caught up in the day, they don't stop to relax and eat the expensive dinner they paid for. It makes for a terrible night especially if you're drinking a lot. I tell every couple, when your dinner hits the table, you sit and eat all of it, then get back to the party.

Also, something WILL go wrong, so just roll with it. I've had to break up fistfights at weddings, once had to keep the mother of the bride locked out of the building while the police came to make her leave. Once had a flood in the kitchen and lost power. Something will always go wrong. The best thing to do is roll with it.
