Do you ever care about outlifting, getting bigger than others? Or do you just focus

Do you ever care about outlifting, getting bigger than others? Or do you just focus on yourself. Not just others at the gym, but maybe like those bodybuilders on YouTube?

Example. You see someone bench press 3 plates, while you can only do 2 and a half plates. Does that make you want to push harder to reach his level or do you just do your own thing

another example. You find that your favorite fitness YouTuber has 18 inch arms. Does that make you want to lift even more so you can reach their level?

This type of competitive mindset is probably good for experienced competing bodybuilders. But for the regular gym goer its better to focus on yourself

I try not to actually think like that except sometimes it's the way that my mentality is but ever since a couple of months ago, had some sort of epiphany where I just want to progress on my own, not by the reflection of others

IDGAF about anyone but myself, but that's reflected in my physique. I lift for health and fitness, not *******s.

I think for some people it could be an ego thing. Example, say you deadlift 4 plates, then some guy half your weight does 5 plates, you would want to up your dead lift game.

But then again this mentality can lead to unhealthy habits and ego lifting which can lead to injury

Yeah look it appears like that sometimes to me mentally but then I think about the fact that all it takes is consistency, patience and time. One thing I need to understand is to stop comparing my general strengths to other people because everyone has their own lifting journey that's why I switched from a full strength program to just U/L for general muscle gain and more so, enjoying the progress and process

Comparing yourself to other people institutes alot of mental health problems if it becomes a destructive habit, getting the motivation to lift like others is fine if you understand that it shouldn't affect the way you progress but once you let it get to you, step back abit and reflect

Nah. I am natty and am an ecto, so I know I will never be huge. As long as I am healthy, and not fat, and can be ripped, that is fine with me. I enjoy having a gf hotter than most other guys' gfs though!

Fair enough. Most of the general public are out of shape anyway so being fit is enough to look better than most of them

Just focus on myself since I don't compete anymore.

At a certain point you have to realise that while your physique / strength may not be in the 1% but it's certainly is in the 5%. I'm sure that anyone who lifts is considered big / lean and strong amongst their social circle.

Only on bb.com / IG are you tiny and weak lol

I used to care about other people in the gym until I learned how prevalent juicing is and realised it's a waste of time and just leads to discouragement.

I tend to compare myself more to the average guy on the street and my friends for motivation

thats completely fine and normal. Not everyone is genetically programmed to be HUGE or have 20 inch arms that you see on covers etc.

If you look like you lift, you are doing better than 90% of the people you see on the streets srs

The strongest guy of my gym died last year. He was juicing all year around just to be the biggest and strongest. It was sad. I lift for my health (sedentary job) and enjoyment, not to be number one on an imaginary 'list'.

My lifting and working out is not about "body building". I like it here though. I am really jelly of dudes that got put through gymnastics as a child. I'm pretty strong, but ya I don't have those skills.

And with my alcoholism, it's really not that easy to master it.

There's always going to be some one bigger, stronger, and faster.
The only person you should be competing against is yourself, be better than the yesterday version of you.

Nothing wrong with healthy competition and goals though.

I'm a very competitive person so I always have this instinct but I force myself to follow my programming. Idk if everyone else is the same tbh.
I even make goals to get bigger and stronger than my friends in secret and thats prolly why I am bigger and stronger than all my friends.

Started lifting for girls, then when I got to the gym I noticed a lot of jacked dudes, so then I started to lift heavier to outlift them. Then I noticed that they were never noticing me noticing them. So then I completely started lifting only for myself, to feel better and to think better. Once I did that, I started getting into the best shape of my life. By then, the jacked guys had started to notice me, but I was no longer noticing them while they were noticing me.

Lift for yourself, that's the most important thing in bodybuilding.

Three bigger non-natty group walked in and start lifting 50% heavier than I do, I'd pick the heavier dumbbells for my sets to show them up and even try to lift their weights to failure (dangerously risking hernia and dumb injuries)

HBB walks in, I think I'm gonna bench 600 lbs today...

Most of those impulses are tempered now, thankfully. What gets me going now is seeing someone working more intensely (not heavier) which gets me in the same rhythm, the general feel to it is "we're all gonna make, brah", not trying to AMOG each other. Like someone said above, always lift for yourself

"ego lifting" ?
What kind of pinko pansy assed bullchit am I reading? What in God's green earth is an "ego lift" and why should you not get horse whipped for using such an insulting phrase? Lifting heavy weights is noble.

It means lifting well past your capabilities, sacrificing form, technique and everything on God's green earth to get a higher number (not to mention risking high injury). I've been guilty of that for well over 5 years, we don't all find our way quickly

If you use too much weight and your form breaks down or you just half rep eeverything to delude yourself into thinking, you can lift way more than you can.

No matter how strong you are, there will always be people who are stronger.

I understand if you are in a lifting competition, where the other person is aware it is a competition, but just comparing yourself to some guy in the gym (or any person anywhere, doing anything) is pointless.

I have this super narcissistic d-bag “buddy” who would lift with me sometimes. I could always tell when he was insecure (always) about someone lifting.

“I can lift more than him”, as he watch someone lift from a distance and put on more weight to actually try.

Oh really? If you are going to have a competition with him, you should at least tell him so he knows and can try his best. But you won’t pussy. You just gonna sit over here, avoid any actual situation with the possibility for you to lose by competing with people who are not even aware they are in a contest. And your only motivation is insecurity.

Nah man, I’m not that guy.

Lol yea it's the genes man.

The guy that dies was always in some kind of secret competition with me. He was shorter than me but just HAD to be better at every lift I did. Sometimes he would follow me around and do every exercise I did after me but just slightly heavier or with more reps. I absolutely did not care and would always be nice and cordial to him.

It felt kinda sad and I knew what he was doing, I just didn't care and sometimes would let him 'win' on purpose.

I wish I told him he was doing OK for himself and not to sweat it.

I used to care when I was younger. Always tried to be the strongest in the gym. Nowadays, I don't really care. There are guys who can lift more than me, but I'm much bigger/leaner.

Form/technique/muscle engagement are my focus points in training now.
