Girlfriend making me feel selfish for wanting to work in the ER at a hospital?

Got a job offer yesterday to work in the ER (nurse) that pays well, super close to home & great hospital. I finally told my GF about it tonight and she got pissed off. Although she lives alone at her apartment, she is close with her family. Alot of her family is unhealthy as fuark so obviously makes them high-risk for covid.

She would rather have me work at some bum azz random job instead of the ER. I understand her worries but the ER is somewhere I have pictured myself working since I started school. I feel like this is my calling and deep down, I know I will regret this decision if I decline the job offer. I have already tried convincing her about statistics, fake-covid myths, etc and nothing seems to change her mind. Am I a selfish prick ?

Depends how srs you are with the girlfriend, but if she's insisting on something you know will make you miserable... screw her.

Well what are your alternatives? Though ER probably has a higher risk than most other floors, you run the risk of coming into contact with plenty of other infectious diseases AND covid on pretty much any floor. Is she suggesting that you don't work as a nurse at all? That'd be ridiculous. I'd honestly just take it, especially since you've stated you're going to regret declining the offer.

Hate to jump too far ahead here but your relationship is doomed. If she can't support your dreams now it will only get worse in the future. It's probably about more than just covid.

Working covid patients has risks but you will probably be fine with PPE. If she supported you she'd be willing to work around it. This might be the end of your relationship, srs.

are you gonna let someone that bleeds out of a hole near their butthole every month decide for you? you're gonna let go of a good opportunity because of her? Fuk no brah. When i was with my ex in the back of my mind im like im never sacrificing my good grades, gym, and self improvement over someone who i may not even be with in a few years. Fast forward.. dont regret a single hour studying/working out that i chose over hanging with her. You pass this job opportunity, she eats tyrones azzhole, you break up and then you missed out on a great opportunity

Bruuuuh. I moved 500 miles cuz for my gig cuz the pay was great and the location, to me, was fukking prime. My girl came along even though it kinda stunted her opportunities but it didn't matter cuz I could bankroll us both. Now we are both doing well career wise and its all worked out. If she can't get on board with you getting an ideal spot where you want to be then why be with her? You are a gottam nurse- you'll be exposed to it no matter where you go! IMO primary care would be 5x riskier just with the sheer number of people you'll see. ER is probably the best place to go to avoid covid...

Dude, the ER is perfectly safe. I seperated my shoulder in may and last Friday. Both times was in the ER. First time 17 hours, last time 5.

All kinds of safety protocols they take, anyone with symptoms is going someplace else. Honestly I wouldn't even be concerned about it.

Not at all. Wear an N95 and wash your hands. Rapid tests are becoming widely available now and will change everything.

I worke ER as an RN for 5 years and it’s the only place to work IMO, maybe cath lab but ER is the best. I do urgent care as an NP and when Covid hit my wife was like 5 months preggo and I’ve been around a ton of patients. Still see them daily and now I have a 3 week old baby.

If she can't support you following an admirable career you're passionate about then just leave her. If you refrain from taking the job because of her she will subconsciously stop respecting you for not standing up to her anyways and it will go downhill regardless.

No. You are not a selfish prick. Tell her if she loves you, she will understand why you want to do this. It's more than a job.

Lol...

I don't know the last time any of you guys were in the ER, I was there Friday but no one is wearing N95 masks. They are wearing surgical masks. EVERYONE. In fact the first time I went in in May I was wearing a 3M N95, they gave me a surgical mask "to be more comfortable."

Doesn't sound like she cares for your health (lol women dont' give two chits) it sounds like she's jealous. This sounds like deep seeded jealousy if your story is true.

I got my first job after I finished nursing school around the same time period Covid-19 started. I actually worked as a Home Health nurse previously (basically one-on-one private care at a sick person's house my entire shift) and even then, she was dissapointed I took the job. She said I didn't really need the job because we lived together and just wait until the Coronavirus to be over before I get a job & work in a hospital.

The thing is, I hated working in Home Health. It's basically glorified expensive babysitting (pay is decent tho). It's been my dream since I started school to one day work in the ER and this opportunity presented itself in front of me recently.

I understand her side of the story about wanting to keep her family safe, but at the end of the day, I really feel like it's my calling to work in a hospital already. I've worked so hard for this. And I already made my decision. We argued about it tonight but I didn't buy into her ultimatum and she somewhat broke up with me I think.

wow that is great to hear. Salute to you man. I have plenty of buddies i graduated with that now work in the ER and they all seem to be doing safe so far. Did you wife bring up conversations about you stopping your work at Urgent Care while she was pregnant? Would you have changed your job (idk maybe work at some telehealth primary care clinic) if she asked you to?
