Interesting, it's unfortunate in this age how easy it is to manipulate an entire population purely by having access to even a modest amount of personal network data and by subtly controlling their social media environment. Am not one for conspiracy theories but tbh I don't see any reason why China wouldn't take the opportunity to use such a prolific platform given the success that Russia has had when interfering with things like the UK referendum.

Lol at how people just assume their data is safe on a pretty much unregulated foreign app from a country where the government essentially does what it wants

I dont disagree with his decision because the app is tracking and sending data to China....BUT Tik Tok, from a subversive and silencing perspective, is the bottom of the barrel.

******** and Twitter out here trying to start a real revolution in this country with censorship. I would like to see Trump handle that problem outside of an executive order that appears to have done nothing.

Hmm aren’t there tons of other apps on the App Store made and owned by Chinese? I get tok tok is the biggest, but is this ban needed? Sort of getting into deep shet with data thievery and/or data knowledge for lack of a better word, which is on everyone’s PC/phone.

It's about time.. China blocks every single US app.. ********, google, instagram, whatsapp and so on.. none are allowed in china.. so why wouldn't US do the same back to them? You realize chinese companies are making money off them yet no american apps are allowed into the chinese market.. For the Chinese government to call the US unfair for blocking tik tok and wechat is laughable.

This and Tik Tok was way more nefarious than those apps mentioned in terms of spying. Teams work together to dig into the code of apps and find exactly what they're capable of spying on and Tik Tok was the worst. Few examples are they pull the IP address and MAC address off of every device on your WLAN, GPS heartbeat every 30 seconds, full contacts list access, full app history and anything you copy using your phones built in copy function automatically was sent back to their servers.

China accused the United States of "political suppression" after President Donald Trump signed twin executive orders restricting US citizens' use of TikTok and WeChat.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters that the decision came at the expense of Americans.

However, spokesman Wang said: "The US is using national security as an excuse and using state power to oppress non-American businesses. That's just a hegemonic practice. China is firmly opposed to that," he said.

Wang added that Trump's act has come "at the expense of the rights and interests of US users and companies. The US is carrying out arbitrary political manipulation and suppression."

The US ban also extends to Chinese company Tencent, which owns WeChat. The order was issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, that can bar US citizens from dealing with sanctioned parties.

I actually just finished an intelligence estimate on Chinese espionage activities in the US for grad school last night so I can answer a little about this. The biggest factor is China's 2017 National Intelligence Law.

Cliffs from that law:

-Article 7: "Any organization or citizen shall support, assist and cooperate with the state intelligence work in accordance with the law"

-Article 16: "When the staff of the state intelligence work organization performs tasks according to law, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the State, after obtaining the corresponding documents, they may enter the relevant areas and places that restrict access, and may understand and ask relevant information to relevant organs, organizations and individuals. You can check or retrieve relevant files, materials and articles."

Essentially this means that China can leverage any business or individual as an intelligence collector under the law. TikTok was sending huge amounts of data to Chinese servers and was essentially functioning as a massive spying program.

Many diplomat children use TikTok, it's an absolute gold mine for information. You can get a layout of diplomatic properties, kids' connections, diplomats' phone numbers, school habits, phone habits, if you want to the opportunities are limitless to what a bad actor could do.

EDIT: Thanks for the upvotes. Let me propose a situation, you as TikTok silo off an GPS area, let's say an international school. You immediately know that the kids are rich or are diplomat kids. You can then immediately cross reference their data and within a short period of time you know who their friends are, who their contacts are. You can then workout their parents phone numbers, then with your infiltrated 5G Networks (I sound like a conspiracy theorist) you can drop in on the diplomats phone conversations or whatever. It also opens up the kids for social engineering and blackmail. Kids are stupid and will probably sext each other, bam you have blackmail. The kids will also make TikToks walking around their house. However they may always avoid a room (secure room or parents bedroom), bam you know where the juicy stuff happens. You could also activate the microphone and listen in on dinner conversations, where mum or dad diplomat criticises someone else. Or if diplomat parent has TikTok to check in on their kids they microphone can then listen in on other conversations. You might use a seperate secure cell phone for work, but that means nothing if your non secure phone is next to it sucking up all the audio and telemetry.
