I blame a (realistically) two-party system. It allows both sides to throw carrots and isolate people on issues which should be decided with more options and nuance. Hating one side is not a good enough reason to vote for everything the other side claims they will do.

And lets not forget that politicians have investments, and family members/friends with investments (along with other opposing politicians with the same circumstances), and laws that are made/bills that are passed affect the profitability of these investments.
