I attended a 13 hour gender identity conference and I think my brain has melted

More like anti gender identity, really.

Speakers included Abigail Shrier, author of Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters, powerlifter and founder of Save Women's Sports Beth Stelzer, Attorney Kara Danskey, free speech advocate Megah Murphy, epidemiologist and detransitioned man Hacsci Horvath, and several young adult detransitioners including Sydney Wright and Keira Bell.

I was surprised to see so many parents of older teens and young adults in attendance, and delightfully surprised to see so many men (note: full attendance was hidden to prevent doxxing, so I only saw who chose to use an avi in the Discord chat). One mother and activist, Lynn Meagher, spoke at length about losing both her son and daughter to what she perceives to be a cult.

Several speakers had me completely on board with what they were saying, but I'm still noodling on the idea that euphemistic phrases like "trans identifying males" or "trans women" shouldn't even be entertained. One particular speaker believed that adopting these terms deliberately obfuscates and confuses, and argued that women in particular should rely on their own perception and not be coerced into using this fake language. She referenced Andrea Dworkin's work around the "male power of naming," and that very time we say "trans women" or even "trans identifying" we are supporting every bit of bullchit and harm being done to us and others. Instead, she advocated for "men who demand I recognize them as women." Not so sure that I agree TBH. Thots?

AMA?

don't a bunch of young girls become trans because it is a way of gaining acceptance and praise from their peers, and it has some link to autism? Apparently this is a big thing now. There were like no trans kids when I was in highschool a few years ago, so this is a very new phenomenon

Same. I don't have cable so don't watch the news and pretty much never hear about trans gender people IRL. I'm assuming you had to attend that meeting for work?

I think I occupy a weird place when it comes to all of this.

I believe you, as the owner of your body, have the right to make whatever changes to it you desire. If you'd like to attach a machine gun where your dink used to be, you should be able to do that.

If your name is Larry but you prefer to be called Sam, let me know that. As long as you don't expect me to know that beforehand, we are solid.

Same thing if you wanna become a woman or a man. Solid.

Just know that you have made a choice which has consequences and do not be upset with other people for having opinions on your decision.

I generally don't care what people do provided that they are aware of the consequences of the decisions they make.

Yes, there was a therapist who spoke about that phenomenon, and also how difficult it can be for any girl who doesn't feel like she fits in with her own peer group, then finds a group online who accepts her. I thought the social media bit was fascinating.

I didn't hear anything about violent phallic forms. I did hear about men reacting to women's words with violence, though. That's a real thing that happens and I'm glad it was talked about.

Yep, I think I saw a couple on Tinder too. Don't know if transgender or cross dressers.

No, I would be very surprised at any workplace sanctioning something like this. The attendee list had to be hidden so that people wouldn't be doxxed and fired from their jobs.

I completely agree with you. I give zero fuks what adults chose to do with their body. I care when people dictate the words I can or cannot say, or when my private spaces are invaded, or when it's clear that men are sexually aroused by making women uncomfortable. And I care deeply whne adults try to tell children that there is something wrong with who they are born as. Otherwise, do whatever you want.

We are of the same opinion on this, I think, then.

As long as it isn't compulsory or made law that one is required to oblige every decision made by a small subset of the population, I am okay.

But it does feel like it is going that direction... And it is so disingenuous to pretend that men and women are not different or "specialized" to certain roles. That is not to say that men and women cannot blur these lines a bit but wholly disregarding them is a bit of a different story and acting like the inherent traits of male and females don't exist is a bit silly.

My daughter attended high school in Northampton MA and there were a bunch of trans kids. They graduated 4 years ago and 3 of them have already killed themselves.

Once these kids enter the real world and their popularity vaporizes they end up absolutely shattered.

Yes, it seems as though it's mostly young girls wanting to become boys, and middle aged men wanting to become women. That's why I'm pretty over the misc "mentally ill" schtick - it's not helpful in discussing why girls are trying to opt out of puberty and their bodies. Why? Why are they doing that?

On the latter part of the OP:

Honestly, I fundamentally agree with that analysis regarding "meaning is use/validation". What certain interest groups try to do is "control the dialogue" - this is precisely what Bill C-16 in Canada does. Did this come up in the discussion?

So what happens is that legislative moves are made, and interests groups try to normalize what is happening such that you don't even realize it. I guess parents might - some schools are probably running "gender fluid sensitivity" classes, now, to indoctrinate people with this way of speaking as early as possible to prevent people from just stopping and saying:

"Wait, why am I being told how I can refer to other people?"
