Death Toll of Communism

"The late Rudolph Rummel, the demographer of government mass murder, estimated the human toll of twentieth-century socialism to be about 61 million in the Soviet Union, 78 million in China, and roughly 200 million worldwide. These victims perished during state-organized famines, collectivization, cultural revolutions, purges, campaigns against “unearned” income, and other devilish experiments in social engineering.

In its monstrosity, this terror is unrivaled in the course of human history."

"The Marxists’ biggest targets have always been the family, religion, and civil society—institutional obstacles to the imposition of the omnipotent state. With the Bolsheviks in power, Lenin set out to destroy them."

"We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear familystructure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable."

For perspective, 75 million died during WWII, 6 million died in the Holocaust, 1.5 million during the Armenian genocide.

I think we can agree that the people at the top of any governmental system don't really give a chit whether your pleb ass lives or dies.

Also are we still counting China as communist even though they are the "capitalist" world's sweat shop?

Needs to have higher emphasis in the American educational system

the two sides of the authoritarianism of the 20th century - Nazism and Communism

both responsible for unspeakable evils. Our educational system could do better at highlighting more of the communism side

I couldn't agree more. I learned about communism from my dad and Grandmother who grew up in the Czech republic and lived through it. I can't remember it being taught in school.

Nuclear families aren't a "western tradition". They are a human tradition. And there is a lot less slooting in communist countries. But yes, communism is responsible for at least 40M worldwide deaths. The fact that we have young people today carrying the hammer and sickle banner and arguing Stalin wasn't so bad says a lot about our people. People are very unaware of the horrors of the past.

I'm not as familiar with if this played much of a role in the soviet union, but in communist China under Mao emphasizing allegiance to the party over everything, including denouncing family members who expressed any form of doubt or opposition, was a core tenant.

Mao himself claimed that a total of 700,000 people were killed in attacks on "counter-revolutionaries" during the years 1950–1952.[169] However, because there was a policy to select "at least one landlord, and usually several, in virtually every village for public execution",[170] the number of deaths range between 2 million[170][171][172] and 5 million.[173][174] In addition, at least 1.5 million people,[175] perhaps as many as 4 to 6 million,[176] were sent to "reform through labour" camps where many perished.[176] Mao played a personal role in organizing the mass repressions and established a system of execution quotas,[177] which were often exceeded.[166] He defended these killings as necessary for the securing of power.

Mass killings are not usually associated with Mao and the Great Leap Forward, and China continues to benefit from a more favourable comparison with Cambodia or the Soviet Union. But as fresh and abundant archival evidence shows, coercion, terror and systematic violence were the foundation of the Great Leap, and between 1958 and 1962, by a rough approximation, some 6 to 8 per cent of those who died were tortured to death or summarily killed—amounting to at least 3 million victims.

Not all deaths during the Great Leap were from starvation. Frank Dikötter estimates that at least 2.5 million people were beaten or tortured to death and one million to three million committed suicide.[105][2] He provides some illustrative examples. In Xinyang, where over a million died in 1960, 6–7% (around 67,000) of these were beaten to death by the militias. In Daoxian county, 10% of those who died had been "buried alive, clubbed to death or otherwise killed by party members and their militia." In Shimen county, around 13,500 died in 1960, of these 12% were "beaten or driven to their deaths."[106] In accounts documented by Yang Jisheng,[37][56] people were beaten or killed for rebelling against the government, reporting the real harvest numbers, for sounding alarm, for refusing to hand over what little food they had left, for trying to flee the famine area, for begging food or as little as stealing scraps or angering officials.

-------------------------------

Analysis of 20,000 mass grave sites by the DC-Cam Mapping Program and Yale University indicates at least 1,386,734 victims of execution.[1][2] Estimates of the total deaths resulting from Khmer Rouge policies, including death from disease and starvation, range from 1.7 to 2.5 million out of a 1975 population of roughly 8 million.

Ben Kiernan estimates that about 1.7 million people were killed.[6] Researcher Craig Etcheson of the Documentation Center of Cambodia suggests that the death toll was between 2 and 2.5 million, with a "most likely" figure of 2.2 million. After 5 years of researching some 20,000 grave sites, he concludes that "these mass graves contain the remains of 1,386,734 victims of execution".[7] A UN investigation reported 2–3 million dead, while UNICEF estimated 3 million had been killed.[8] Demographic analysis by Patrick Heuveline suggests that between 1.17 and 3.42 million Cambodians were killed,[9] while Marek Sliwinski suggests that 1.8 million is a conservative figure.[10] Even the Khmer Rouge acknowledged that 2 million had been killed—though they attributed those deaths to a subsequent Vietnamese invasion.[11] By late 1979, UN and Red Cross officials were warning that another 2.25 million Cambodians faced death by starvation due to "the near destruction of Cambodian society under the regime of ousted Prime Minister Pol Pot"

-------------------------

Early estimates of the death toll by scholars and government officials varied greatly.[14] According to higher estimates, up to 12 million[15] ethnic Ukrainians were said to have perished as a result of the famine. A U.N. joint statement signed by 25 countries in 2003 declared that 7–10 million perished.[16] Research has since narrowed the estimates to between 3.3[17] and 7.5[18] million. According to the findings of the Court of Appeal of Kiev in 2010, the demographic losses due to the famine amounted to 10 million, with 3.9 million direct famine deaths, and a further 6.1 million birth deficits.[19]

Its crazy how communism manages to get rid of all regular forms of death and just starts intentionally killing people instead. Truly tragic.
