Home owner brahs (hot water tank problems)

Fuark I rolled the dice and my 18 year old hot water tank finally gave up the ghost and ruptured. Luckily my basement is unfinished in that area.


Anyways its a 40 gal, and ive contacted a tradie who will come over and replace it for $880 if I pay cash. This includes everything including taking the old one.

Is that a fair price? First time ive had to replace one of these. I see they are like 650 for a cheap one at home depot.

It is a natural gas type water tank btw



tldr;

That is about what i payed a few years back from a plumbing and heating distributors place for people in the industry.
My guy hooked it all up and told me that they are to be flushed periodically which was news to me.
There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

uh that is cheap af. changing a water heater is a pain in the ass for starters and typically are not cheap to replace. quarantine must of caused tradies to drop their rates

Fair yes. If it needs an expansion tank then he ought to charge more. Make sure he puts one in.

Tankless electric has to have enough 220 circuits available for the phucktons of amps. Tankless gas though would be GOAT.

+1 for tankless if feasible. I tried to get one when my tank gave out, but would have required running new pipes so couldn't do it.

Thanks everyone. Will rep when possible over next few days.

I hope this guy knows what he is doing, it is a legitimate business that does all sorts of plumbing/gas work, and ill know if he does it wrong. I went through how to spot retard tradies when I had a gas stove installed.

Tbh its something I can do myself but I just dont wanna deal with running around and buying all the chit and learning to solder copper pipe. Plus the wife gave me "the look" when I suggested we could do it ourselves lol.


We just changed a dishwasher ourselves and it was a nightmare making it right due to the last installer/home owner cutting corners. So yea. Ill pay a tradie this time.

appreciate input but its like 5k I recall and my water type will only cause future problems, in BC they say tankless is only good for like a cottage or something

piss easy but I still have to buy parts, solder and deal with time of install, cheaper to go to work and pay instead. Im actually a tradie too, but make far more than a typical tradie.

damn dude that sucks about water heater

looks like a decent price but I'd make sure I had some documentation on it and make sure tradie is certified and chit

if ur including labor and it's cash...seems a bit susp

Hot water tank is easy as fuk to swap. Dont even have to solder ****. Shark bite the copper and get a flex gas line if allowed. But also, sounds like he's only charging a couple hundred labor maybe so thats a good deal.

For a gas, installed, not atall a bad price.

Ask for references. Make sure it’s not a fly by handyman.

Handymen are ok I suppose but they better know what they’re doing when it comes to messing with gas equipment.

If you can afford it, get a professional plumber company to do it. If not, a very highly recommended and trusted handyman could possibly do a fine job also.

You could probably go down to the local 7/11 and find a tradie to do it for a pack of cigarettes and big gulp for a lot cheaper.
