If you dont need a full sized truck, I think they’re the best in the class. Dont have alot of tech competitors will have, but all that chit is fluff for the most part anyways.

Toyota tax is real though so expensive as hell for what it is.

That being said - for my own needs i would go 4Runner trd.

15 year replacements on the Tacoma frames....that alone is worth it. Knowing you will have that truck for 15 years if you want to. Thats some serious cost effectiveness right there.

Get an Off road rather than a sport, bigger rear differential, E locker, etc. Love mine. I bought an AT because if I want to shift and feel sporty I'll ride my motorcycle. Off road is only available in short bed for crew cab, I wanted long bed so that was a factor too. The sport is basically just paying extra for the chin spoiler and fake hood scoop.

I have a frontier pro-4x and love it. Better value that Tacoma IMO. Only con is my mpg is like 14.5 but yolo gas is is like $1.60 down here

This generation of Taco is a complete failure....Gutless engine, horrible seating position, etc..

I've owned Tacos in the past and wouldnt consider this generation....I would MUCH rather have a Chevy ZR2/Bison even with the slightly less reliability rating.

I have a 2018 TRD Off-Road 4x4 and I love it. Needed something that is capable off road but can also accommodate my 60lb pup comfortably on long trips, haul my bay boat, kayak, mountain bike and fishing gear. The Tacoma checks all those boxes so I didn't see the need for a full size at this time. I will say that the automatic transmission leaves a lot to be desired unless you drive it in S4 with ECT on, but this won't be an issue on the 6MT.

Tacomas look pretty bad@ss honestly, but like it's been said, their interior tech leaves a lot to be desired. The interior looks like it's a 2015 model. Highly capable and long-lasting tho.

3rd gens have the most horsepower of any generation. My 4Runner had the 4.0l the 3.5 blows it away, but it needs to be revved. They are tuned for gas mileage and running in the simulated Atkinson cycle at low rpm, step on the skinny peddle and let it wind up and its plenty for mid size truck. Full size truck won't fit very well on the trails/roads where I go, would be getting pinstripes down the sides from branches etc.

Don't buy it thinking it'll be more reliable. Three out of the four people I know who drive Toyota trucks have just as much trouble out of them as any any other brand. Mythical Toyota reliability is a stereotype from the 90's that people still cling to and it drives both the msrp and the resale value. Its a lot like the cult swindle that Jeep manages with the Wrangler.

The only way I've found the "livable" is with a pedal commander if its not lifted with tires. If its lifted with tires its hopeless unless you supercharge it.

...and I am a big fan of mid-sized for the trails and Toyota quality is legendary. My favorite truck I've ever owned was my lifted 96 on 33s with Super Swampers and ARB air lockers. That thing was unstoppable.....I just cant get into this generation with all of its flaws...and if you own this generation please dont take that personally. Its just not for me personally. I cant stand driving anything that I feel I have to get out and push to get going.

I think 90% of wrangler owners are self aware enough to know they just wanted a 4WD you can take the top off of and it was the only such vehicle on the market. I will say the 4.0 inline 6 they used to use was one of the most reliable engines ever made. Horrific gas mileage to HP ratio but an absolute workhorse with tons of low end torque. I have high hopes for the new Bronco cause the ecoboost engines are miles better than the pentastar V6s. I still can't believe Ford didn't have the good sense to drop the 5.0 coyote in a Bronco and print money like they were JPow

Drove a Tundra for 18 years. Loved the chit out of her, nothing ever went wrong but the bad gas mileage. Had to let her go sadly and wanted a smaller SUV type and got the XSE Hybrid RAV4 last year. Tacomas are sick though. All around great vehicles and will last forever.

I do get annoyed with this sometimes that's why I've learned to just put it in S4 and turn ECT on as soon as I get into the truck. Wish they came out with a 4 cylinder turbo or something better than the current V6
