But Muh Thyroid- Misc Doctors

Haven't felt like my usual chipper self for some time now. Could be life stress and being too fluffy.

However I've had symptoms of low thyroid for quite awhile. And thinking back I have had issues with swallowing and hoarseness here and there for maybe 5 years.

Last winter I did get some more involved labs done re:thyroid because I've been trying to figure it out. Only one number showed up as out of range:

Then recently I found out I have a thyroid nodule which was discovered when I had an x-ray for something else- 2.3 cm. I was sent for an ultrasound and then a biopsy. It was benign.

Looking at options (other than do nothing/monitor) and two definitely look bad (take meds to suppress the thyroid or have a portion of the thyroid removed). One seems like it could actually help, but I may not be able to get it (radio frequency ablation). I think to do that I would probably have to self-pay. I don't know what it might cost yet and I would be willing to travel if I could and it would be less expensive. The last was more general "stay healthy" type advice- supplement iodine, get more selenium, B vitamins and zinc in your diet, avoid sugar/gluten, reduce stress. I mean, yeah, can do I guess, but not sure how helpful that will be.

Whatcha think?

Nothing/monitor/deal with symptoms or try to get RFA or can something like adding iodine reduce the size of the nodule without reducing thyroid function?

Nodules rarely cause thyroid dysfunction. Hormone imbalance is a much more likely cause for your symptoms especially considering you are a female miscer and therefore very likely menopausal

Oh, surely perimenopausal anyway. I know average age is around 51? Don't know when my mom's would have been because she had a hys. One of her sisters was about 60. Don't know about the other two.

Don't know. I would think that all the salt in processed stuff is iodized at least.

Any idea what would cause a high thyroxine reading?

Um, yeah. Gonna show me your medical degree?

ETA: Nothing, ablation, iodine???

And, if it matter any re:you are just old, deal with it; other than low iron, low vit D, and low vit A I think I'm fairly healthy- high bone density, usually lower blood pressure, had a chest CT that came back with 0 for calcium for my entire heart. That last one was based on my age group, so not sure how much it matters.

I think that TBG is barely elevated and if you did it again would likely be normal. Because the rest of your thyroid levels are normal, I don't think you have a thyroid problem. That thyroid nodule may have been an incidental finding. It's easy for providers to anchor on a diagnosis to explain symptoms but in your case, your other thyroid labs show no indication of hypo/hyperthyroidism. What are the rest of your labs like? CBC? Are you anemic? Liver function labs? Vitamin levels? Any chance you're pregnant or clinically depressed?

If it were me, I would look for an alternative diagnosis before doing anything invasive that would affect the rest of my life

You can get on levothyroxine.

High tbg without other higher ranges with no pregnancy or high levels of estrogen usually means you're hypo. I think the ranges are too wide to begin with.

Take iodine supplements (you'll feel even worse for a week due to bromine detox), take vit b complex injections.

Also surprised you didn't get an uptake

Overall good I think.

Latest CBC, lipids, and vits:

Spoiler!

Yes, anemic, but it has been treated and my numbers are back in range. Still not feeling 100%. No on pg, maybe on depression. I know I've had enough stress.

And, got it. Thanks, srs.

Iodine test
preferably thru urine or hair
selenium blood test
Vitamin D blood test
Vitamin A blood test
Zinc blood test

test them all, beside taking
unstaurated fat, may reduce
and optimize your thyroid but nothing
is guarnteed, i recall a group of ppl back
on 2005 who used to take a megadose
of iodine (25mg) Under the name Iodoral
to combat nodules and cancers

bear in mind
your thyroid results look
good, but something is pushing
the thryoid to grow wheither it was a toxic or no toxic nodule

4oz real Cranberry (not concentrate) daily for a few weeks + 2000-2500iu of Vitamin D CAPLETS (not tablets) supplement, retest and report back.

Don't assume you're getting enough iodine from salt unless you're eating a chit ton of microwave dinners or high fat/carb low protein meals that need megadose salt for flavoring.

Is that something I can self order or something I would have to see an endo for? I'm not insured and just doing the best I can.

I was getting fairly regular B complex injections when I was in MI, but I haven't found a good provider for those here in DFW. I didn't have any from June to November of 19/one in November of 19/none since. So worth trying for sure.

I have tests for D and A posted above. Zinc was in range as of last November (89). Never tested selenium or iodine.

I've gotten a fair bit of sun through spring and early summer. I was taking vit D and vit A for about 3 months (starting November '19). My vit A didn't move up at all (32) and my Vit D went down between then (24) and March (21.7).

How much oily fish do you eat? If not much, start eating that chit right now.

Sardines are best. Otherwise salmon is good too.

Sardines 3 times a week, salmon (wild caught, Pacific sourced not farmed) twice a week.

Up your eggs intake too. Ded srs.

ok havent see
youll need at least 10k vitamin A consumed with fats (butter/full milk)
the same goes for vitamin D

both are low, which pushs
me to think that your
Iron storgae and usage
is low too..Ferritin and Serum Iron

to make it short
1- Add fishoil(3 grams if suitable)
2- olive oil in dressing..etc or 1-2 table sppoon
3-no more white or easy carbs (only BLM carbs)
4- try to look into probiotics and bacteria, seems with such low vits your body have weak absorption
5-more oats

thats my thoughts
would reccomend these to reafd

Labsmd and privatemdlabs should both have them.

Get the vit D with k2 for better absorption.

Lugols solution for iodine.

Order a vial of vitamin b complex for sheep/bovine. It's available on Amazon and you can do your own.

Don't like fish or eggs (see user title). When I looked for stuff with vit A and saw eggs I wondered if I could stand to just shoot them raw...bleh.

Never tried sardines due to my general anti-fish stance and hearing so many people hate them. I do like some less favored salty stuff though like olives.

Salmon is some of the most pallet-able for non-fish lovers (not as much of a fish-y taste). Cook with some simple seasoning like bay leaf and mustard (srs)

Yes, anemia crew.

Spoiler!
heavy menses, fibroid, likely absorption

Old labs:

Spoiler!

Tried to get my level up with pills/liquid iron and more beef. Couldn't get it done. Saw a hematologist and got iron infusions.

More recent labs:

Spoiler!

I have to travel next week so it will probably be the week of the 24th before I can get started on what's been suggested.

What about canned? Used to have that sometimes when my grandma made it. I usually only like fish if it is very fresh. Like my dad used to fish and would do fish fries, or going someplace like Ivar's in Seattle.

as an online misc doctor, when your lab was at 34 and the high range was 31 and that was 9 months ago I would say get another set of labs and see what it says. Maybe its in range now. Its not like it was double over the range.

or it could be exactly the same, or it could be increasing. All we have is a snapshot in time from 9 months ago.

Buy this multi OP:

Has optimal dosages and forms of all the vitamins you need as well as a nice dose of Iodine and Selenium. It's my go to.

Do your best to make your iodine intake as low as possible.

For most (especially if you have Hashimoto's antibodies) iodine is the problem not the fix.

Get checked for Hashimoto's. Pull labs of TSH, free T3, free T4 and reverse T3 again.

400 mcg of iodine shut my thyroid down years ago when I added it to my diet.

I have attached the excel thyroid plotter I use. The numbers in it are my labs from May. I am not on any thyroid medication.

You def don't need surgery... why would you think you need surgery when all your thyroid levels are normal except for TBG which is only slightly elevated? That makes no sense. Also, your nodule was benign.

You said you have symptoms of LOW thyroid then want to remove part of your thyroid? That would lower your thyroid.

Anyways your levels are all normal so this is not related to thyroid at all it's way more likely to be other hormones or just bad sleep or stress. Stress can have a massive impact on your mind and body which shouldn't be ignored. Try exercising more and doing more cardio to destress along with joining a yoga or meditation class or some relaxing group fitness class and being around your friends more. Also try to clean up your diet of processed foods and sugar.
