Thought this was an interesting and neat video:

Cliffs

- Early game, major civilizations (Greeks, Egyptians, Mesopotamians) were centered around the Mediterranean
- Whoever controlled the Mediterranean and specifically the Italian peninsula had control and the most leverage/power basically
- Alps blocked any land invasions (inb4 Hannibal) and invasions from the south had to be done by sea
- Late game, mediterreanean no longer the central hub of major civilizations and control of it became less important
- Strait of Gibraltar prevented Italian exploration and colonialism around the world (not as successful as England, Spain, France)
- In WWII, Italians suffered massive causalities crossing alps to invade Austro-Hungary, could not have a naval army as it would get boxed in by Strait of Gibraltar and Suez Canal (invading was hard)
- Mountains and geography separated people and created distinct cultures/city states, the poor South Italy vs rich North Italy; Vatican and San Marino basically city states never united under Italy
- Being a superpower is all about the geography boyos
