I honestly feel like social media just has a negative effect on people these days

It's like there is nothing to be gained from using social media or having social interaction with people on the internet. It makes people extremists, gets people centered around circle jerking and ego stroking, and it simply brings negative energy in general.

Unless you're job somehow requires you to use social media, like advertising, social media is a waste of time.
