Misc Doctors: bruised ribs, should I keep lifting?

So I bruised my ribs pretty bad right under my right pec. Was playing street ball and some guy elbowed me hard in the ribs, it didn’t hurt too bad at first but when I woke up the next day I could feel it and had a nice bruise.
It’s been about a week and it still hurts when I turn around in bed and when I laugh or cough. Sucks because I was just getting back to the gym. Should I start lifting light or take more time off? Haven’t lifted since I bruised them. Any exercises I should avoid? How long should it take to recover?

I probably had something different, mine was more like microtears in my intercostal muscles. However, it made it difficult to do compound exercises like squats, deadlift and bench press without it being painful.

Use your head and common sense. If it doesn't hurt at all do them, if it hurts, don't do them. Work around any injuries you may have. It's a lot better than sitting at home and rotting. obviously get some good rest and reassess how you feel in a week or two.

I didn’t go to the doctor, but I’m assuming I just bruised them. Hopefully not a fracture or something but I think that would hurt worse.

Thanks for the advice brah, repped. Will hit the gym today and see how it feels.

I had a broken rib years ago. Didn't lift for 1 month, than started going slow with it.

As much as it sucks, you gotta let it heal. Maybe only train legs for a month.

I've had some terrible pain in my hands the last month from lifting dumbbells(among other various exercises) and it eventually got to a point where it was too painful to do any lifting with my hands at all. Went away after stopping for a couple weeks, and glad I finally bit the bullet.

I don’t want to take weeks off right after I got back into the gym /: so I’ll start off light and see how it feels. Do rib injuries really take that long to heal?

Might be worthwhile to see a doc if it persists, it's not always easy to tell the difference between a bruise and a fracture. Both will heal over time though but if it gets worse or start kneeling over in extreme pain then yeah obv.

Like for me intercostal muscles are pretty much indistinguishable from bruised ribs in terms of pain. Pretty much the same symptoms. But I never suffered any significant impact to it, it was more so a product of overdoing front squats and not keeping the rib cage open (I was squishing it repeatedly causing aggrevation to the muscles in between) so I kinda ruled that out.

But yeah, don't try to work through pain, do what feels good and what you can manage pain free. For me personally as well I was at least still doing leg extensions, seated leg curls, very strict curls against the wall, etc. I just tried out things that didn't hurt, adapted and went ahead with them. It took 5 weeks to fully heal and be pain free so fukn lol at taking 7 full weeks off the gym and rotting. If I took time off the gym for every little boo boo, nick or scratch I'd probably never be in the gym.

Don't listen to her/him/shim, it's an idiot.

Listen to the first reply. Find movements you can do without pain and train those, lay off anything that causes an issue for the time being.

Headed to the gym rn. Gonna try light back/bi workouts and legs. I probably won’t be able to bench for a couple weeks I suspect.

you do realize lifting stimulates blood flow, and blood carries oxygen and nutrients, which actually FACILITATES recovery?

telling somebody to sit on the couch and rot barring a catastrophic injury that doesn't allow OP to walk is the worst advice. muscles atrophy and become weaker if you don't use them, opening them up to worst. least OP should be doing is going for light walks. but there isn't any reason he shouldn't lift, even if it's lighter as long as it's pain-free.

Feel it out. Get in the gym, start light. If it's painful take a bit of time off, if not go for it but progress conservatively

Why stop at 3 weeks? Just go ahead and take 6 weeks off OP. Matter of fact, take the rest of the year off to ensure you don't experience any physical discomfort whatsoever. Hell, you know what, you're natty right? If so, then you might as well just never pick up another weight in your life because you will never be Mr. Olympia.

Lots of conflicting opinions itt. Just got back from the gym, felt some discomfort but not really any worse compared to every day movements. It mostly hurts when I turn side to side or when doing overhead movements.

It’s been a little over a week I think and the bruising is mostly gone, but it still hurts. That’s why I was concerned and wondering if it might be a fracture. It didn’t hurt too bad at the gym though, but I could definitely feel it. I think I’d be in more pain if I fractured or broke it.

And why not both? (;

I’ll prob grow it out more but the maintenance sucks. It’s so thick I use gel or a hat to keep it looking good lol. But the sloots are mirin, plus I’ve never grown it out long before so I wanna see how it looks.

Also didn’t know it was all about the hair. And with your preferences you’d go for a 6’5 baldcel than a 6’0 chad with great hair

The best exercises for me were climbing stairs, squats, calf raises. basically lower limb exercises that require very little core muscles. Avoid weights training. Eat well. Drink lots of water. Take care!
The bruise is already mostly gone and it still hurts. Should this be concerning? How would the ice/heat help if the bruise is gone? Thanks for the advice man. Repped
