How can the universe be both infinitely large and expanding?

Either it's infinitely large (has no measurements), or it is finite (has measurements) and is expanding.

Logically it can't be both.

Because SPACE is infinite. Our universe (observable) is finite.

Also all parts of the universe is expanding. So any point in space in our universe is expanding from the next.

also i dont think anyone knows how big the real universe is. the observable universe is finite though.

Also there are parts of the universe moving away from us so fast it's effectively faster than light. So we can never see that part of the universe again.

Says who? Why can't you have an object infinitely large and have the scale changing? All the cosmological constant corresponds to is a kind of vacuum energy. One of the big unsolved issues is this value is about 10^120 times smaller than it should be based on quantum theory. Nobody knows why. But the space "expanding" is just an English statement to try to capture what is happening.

Where is it claimed it's infinitely large? The universe has been expanding since the big bang. It is expanding faster than the speed of light though so we will never 'see' the boundary.

It's not. It's just effectively moving apart from every other part to a degree that ensures the light can't reach us EVER.

Hard to explain with phone text. Think of it like two cars moving away from one another. Any individual car is only moving 50mph in a direction. But 100mph between both.

It's not known whether the universe is or is not compact. For simplicity, it is usually modeled as infinite and asymptotically flat.

there was a paper on this by penrose this year. conformal cyclic cosmology. intredasting stuff.

essentially given enough time there will be nothing left but photons in an empty universe, everythign is flung apart and eventually black holes radiate away. the universe is at that point absolutely enormous but it is equivalent to the universe at the point of the big bang, only difference is scale... so it just repeats.

It is not as if the space is expanding. It's as if the way you measure distance is changing. It can't be visualized by analogy. It is a different kind of "expanding" than you are used to imagining.

I thought it was measurable in theory, but it's expanding so rapidly that in practice it's basically infinite.
